Merrill Allan Smith, 57, died June 26, 2008, at his home in Zionsville. He was born Feb. 18, 1951, in Indianapolis to Marion T. and Lois Jeanette (Hunt) Smith.
He spent much of his youth playing little league baseball, usually being coached by his father. Later, he too would coach little league. He graduated from Southport High School in 1969 and was a letterman in baseball and football, and sang in choir. He attended Ball State University and Purdue University, and received a Bachelor of Science in business from Purdue-IUPUI campus.
He worked as an accountant for Larry Good Homes and the ISTA Credit Union. Most recently, he worked at McGraw Hill CTB as a supervisor. He was a past vice president of the Southport Jaycees and a member of the YMCA.
He lived most of his life on the south and west sides of Indianapolis in the Southport/Greenwood area and in Speedway. He had been a resident of Zionsville for the last five years.
He was a hockey fan and played in local leagues as a goalie. He also played in the Zionsville men’s softball league for a number of years. He was a self-taught musician who could play a mean guitar and enjoyed going to concerts and collecting records. His latest hobby was horse racing. He held a special bond with animals and will be greatly missed by his cat Noodle and dog Gilbert.
Survivors include sister, Marcia Sheldon of Zionsville, and nephews Trent and Sean Sheldon. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, July 11, at Flanner and Buchanan Funeral Center, 105 W. Pine St. A reception will follow at Lions Park in Zionsville.
