Sandra Lynn Heffner of Lebanon

Mrs. Sandra Lynn Heffner passed away Friday, Sept. 14, at Skaggs Community Medical Center in Branson, Mo.

Heffner was born in Lebanon on Jan. 1, 1958.  She was a daughter of Norma Jean (Graham) Staton and the late Woodrow “Woody” Staton.

 A life-long resident of Boone County, she graduated from Zionsville High School in 1976.  She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Butler University. 

 On July 16, 1983, in Zionsville, she married Douglas “Doug” Lee Heffner.

 Sandy was a well-liked teacher in the Boone County community.  She began her teaching career at Pleasant View Elementary in Zionsville where she taught for 10 years.  She took some time off to raise her own children and went back to teach at Granville Wells Elementary and had been there for 20 years.  Her love was seen throughout her life including her service as a Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher.

 A devoted wife, mother and teacher, she loved her school kids as much as her own children.  Sandy was honored with the 2008 Teacher of the Year award for the Western Boone School Corp.

She was a member of the New Brunswick Church of Christ in Lebanon and Delta Kappa Gamma.

She is survived by husband Doug, mother Norma Jean Staton, daughter Melissa Lynn Heffner, son Andrew Douglas Heffner and wife Kim, brothers Randy Staton and Larry Staton and wife Brenda, nieces Katie and Lizzie Staton, newphews Chris Heffner and Jacob Staton, parents-in-law Howard Lee and Carolyn Jean Heffner and sister-in-law Melody Statzer.

Visitation is planned for Wednesday, Sept. 19,, from 2 to 8 p.m. at the New Brunswick Church of Christ in Lebanon.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, at New Brunswick Church of Christ, 6480 South Ind. 39, Lebanon. Jim Coyle will be officiating.

Interment will follow at Old Union Cemetery, in rural Jamestown.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the New Brunswick Church of Christ, Boone County Cancer Society, Inc., 117 W. Elm St., Lebanon, or Western Boone Education Foundation.
