William Howard Bedell


— William Howard Bedell, 92, Lebanon, went to dance with Mom on Sept. 21, 2013, while resting peacefully at Zionsville Meadows.

He was born in Tiskilwa, Ill., on Aug. 28, 1921, to Jess and Mabel Bedell. He graduated from Warren Central High School in 1940 and grew up working on his father’s farms in Illinois and central Indiana. Howard married the love of his life, Breena (Peggy) Lore, on Aug. 25, 1949, in Indianapolis.  

After high school, he worked as a mechanic for the Indianapolis Police Department motorcycle division before he enlisted in the Army. Howard served as an aircraft mechanic while in the Army and was stationed in South Carolina during WWII. Afterward, he continued to serve in the Army Reserves as an aircraft mechanic. After the service he worked at Indianapolis Power & Light as a lineman. He left IP&L and traveled the state maintaining industrial boilers for AB Young Co. before starting his own business, with the help of his wife Peggy, operating the Village Kwik Kleen Laundromat and Dry Cleaners along with the Village Car Wash in Zionsville until 1980. Afterward, they helped his brother-in-law and wife operate the Chapel Hill Cleaners until retirement in 1983.

He was a loving and devoted father, grandfather and great-grandfather. During his time in the Zionsville community he was active in the Chamber of Commerce, Zionsville Fire Department, American Legion and Lions Club. Howard received the Town Crier Award from the Chamber of Commerce for his outstanding service to the community. Both Howard and Peggy enjoyed music and dancing. They were active in the Indianapolis Jazz Club and the Colonial Square Jazz Band where they played to the enjoyment of many in and around Indianapolis. Howard and Peggy were fortunate to have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2009. Howard and Peg together again.

Survivors include daughter, Cynthia Hicks of Monticello; sons, Gregory (Donna) Bedell of Zionsville and Jess (Marina) Bedell of Lebanon; three granddaughters, Krystal (Eric) Ping, Jessica (James) Miller and Ashlea Bedell; one grandson, Seth Bedell; two great-granddaughters, Erika Ping and Mary Ellen Miller; one great-grandson, Tanner Bedell; sister, Hazel Own of Oklahoma; and twin brothers, Chester (Ollie) of Florida and Lester of Indianapolis.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert; and wife Peggy.

Visitation with the family will be from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 13, with a Celebration of Life Memorial service to follow immediately in Zionsville United Methodist Church with Pastor Jim Gentry officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made in Howard’s name to CurePSP, 30 E. Pandonia Rd., Ste. 201, Timonium, MD 21093.

The family also wants to thank St. Vincent Hospice and Zionsville Meadows for their care and compassion during Howard’s last days, as well as Zionsville United Methodist Church for all they have done to support the family during the passing of both Howard and Peggy.
