Ruthmae Bennett

Zionsville — Ruthmae King Bennett, 92, longtime Zionsville resident, passed away April 4, 2013. She was the widow of Harold J. Bennett Sr.

In Ruthmae’s early years she worked as a beautician. She was affectionately known as “Grandma” by her family, staff, and hundreds of children who loved her for her work as cook and part owner of Colonial Village Nursery and Daycare Center. It brought Ruthmae much joy working with children at Colonial Village Daycare.

Ruthmae founded the Melody Club through Noble Centers. The Melody Club was created to give adults with developmental disabilities an opportunity to meet once a month to dance and develop friendships. As a result of her dedication and hard work, she was acknowledged by the MCARC for her service working with developmentally disabled adults. Ruthmae also helped organize the first Indiana Special Olympics.

She enjoyed spending time with her family, including children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She still enjoyed attending sporting events with her family, dressed in blue jeans and tennis shoes. Ruthmae also enjoyed sewing and other crafts, and she was a member of St. Alphonsus Liguori Catholic Church.

Ruthmae will be greatly missed by those who survive her: children, Donald V. and Sherry R. Bennett; grandchildren, Terry Bayt (Dan), Patty Kent (Jim), Diane Bradford (Matt), Cathy Ruchaj (John), Andy Bennett (Kim); and great-grandchildren, Demetria, Paul, Whitney, Heather, Tim, A.J., Chelsea and Shannon.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her son, Harold “Sonny” Bennett Jr.; her daughter-in-law, Roberta Bennett; and Howard B. “Mac” McClain.

A Mass of the Resurrection was held at noon Tuesday, April 9, at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, 1870 W. Oak St., Zionsville. Visitation was from 10 a.m. until time of service, and burial followed services at Salem Cemetery.

Contributions in memory of Ruthmae may be made to Alzheimer’s Association, 50 E. 91st St., Suite 100, Indianapolis, IN 46240.

Arrangements were entrusted to Flanner and Buchanan Zionsville.
