Sara E. Sanderson

Sara E. Sanderson died Wednesday, April 16, 2014, at Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis. She was 75.

Born Nov. 8, 1938, she was the daughter of the now late George H. and Elizabeth Ann (McCune) Brown. Sara was raised in Buffalo, N.Y., graduated Amherst High School and then earned a bachelor's degree from Penn State University. She also received writing instruction from Etheridge Knight at Butler University and W.O Mitchell at Franklin College.

Sara was a published poet and writer, having written her own book “Hugs & Hopes for a Century.” She was also published in Writer's Digest magazine, The Indianapolis Register, Arts Indiana, New York magazine and Indianapolis Woman. Sara was the poet in residence for the Indianapolis Children's Choir and wrote many choral lyrics. She was a Creative Arts Renewal Fellow in 2005-06 for the Arts Council of Indianapolis and was an essay winner in the Indianapolis Business Journal's 2005 anniversary issue.

She also worked for Connecticut General (now CIGNA) and, most recently, at the Indianapolis Public Library's Central Branch and as a court reporter.

She was a member of North United Methodist Church in Indianapolis and the Indianapolis Woman's Club.

Sara took great pride in her family and her city. She enjoyed living downtown, including rooting for the Pacers and Colts. Sara's one-of-a-kind personality knew no strangers and appreciated each new day. Helping was her constant choice, and she left positive energy and feelings with those she encountered.

Survivors include daughter Karen Sanderson of Indianapolis; son Kenny (Greta) Sanderson of Zionsville; sister Barb (Bill) Dodge of Phoenix, Ariz.; grandchildren Tyler, Adam and Mandi Wessel of Indianapolis, and Ellen and Trevor Sanderson of Zionsville; niece Tania (Cecil) Daniels of Los Angeles; and several cousins.

A celebration of life will be 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 2, in the Terrace Room at Tarkington Tower, 4000 N. Meridian St., Indianapolis.
