John Virgil McCloskey

John Virgil “Cocky” McCloskey Jr., 83, of Whitestown, died at 11:50 a.m. Friday, July 5, 2013, at St. Vincent Heart Center of Indiana in Indianapolis.

John was born in Marion County, Indiana, on Sept. 22, 1929, to Clara B. (Roach) and John Virgil McCloskey Sr. He attended Washington High School in Indianapolis and Avon High School in Avon. On Jan. 15, 1949, he was married to Joan Carmen (Walls) McCloskey in St. Anthony Catholic Church in Indianapolis. For 31 years, John worked at Allison Transmission Division of General Motors Corp. before retiring in 1981.

As a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he loved his family and took pride in his children and grandchildren. In 1975, John and his wife began wintering in Florida. He was an avid fisherman, and he liked to hunt rabbits. In addition, in his early years, he enjoyed Golden Glove boxing, playing semi-pro football and playing softball with the Allison’s team. He was a member of the Slovenian National Home in Indianapolis.

Survivors include his wife, Joan C. McCloskey of Whitestown; six children, Diana Leffler and husband, David, of Thorntown, Pam Summitt and husband, Jack, of Lebanon, Sheila Bear and husband, James “Chico,” of Pittsboro, Mark McCloskey and wife, Vickie, of Lebanon, John McCloskey and wife, Rebecca, of Bloomington, and Dan McCloskey and wife, Angie, of Zionsville; a brother, George “Bill” McCloskey and wife, Gloria, of Sarasota, Fla.; three sisters, Ellen Hankins and husband, James, of Grand Junction, Colo., Norma Jean Poulson of Nixa, Mo., and Clara Ann Sharpe of Albuquerque, N.M.; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Georgiana “Betty” Clark; and three grandsons, Norman Ray McCloskey, Jack R. Leffler II and Eric McCloskey.

Funeral services are planned for 11 a.m.Thursday, July 11, at Myers Chapel of Memories, 1502 North Lebanon St., Lebanon, with Pastor Lee Faust officiating. Myers Mortuary is entrusted with the arrangements for cremation.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, at the funeral home.
