Jean Smith

Jean Allison (Hutchins) Noble Smith passed away April 25, 2013, in Walnut Creek, Calif., at age 97.

She was born Dec. 3, 1915, in rural Putnam County, to Osborne and Pauline Hutchins. Jean graduated from Roachdale High School and from Indianapolis Business College in 1932. On May 22, 1937, she married Neall H. Noble. They moved to Zionsville in 1950 and worked together to build a home on West Oak Street. Neall died suddenly in 1964 while on a call for the Zionsville Volunteer Fire Department. Jean later married J. Louis Smith of Indianapolis, who died in 1991.

Jean was responsible for the care of Lincoln Park for many years. She was a Girl Scout leader; a PTA president; and chairman for the very successful Thrift Shop on Main, a fundraising project for the Zionsville Methodist Church. Jean served eight years on the Zionsville Planning Commission. In 1986 she was named Woman of the Year for Zionsville. She enjoyed participating in little theater at the Old Barn in Zionsville and in TV and print advertising.

She moved to California in 1996 to be near her daughter. She continued to sing in community choruses and became a 50-year member of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs. She enjoyed reading, playing bridge and traveling.

Jean is survived by her daughter, Suzanne Noble Gerke; her granddaughters, Janice Rebhan (George) and Diana Wolcott; one great-granddaughter; and five great-grandsons.

She will be remembered by all who knew her for her devotion to family and friends, her wit, and her zest for life.

Private services were held at Lafayette Orinda Presbyterian Church in Lafayette, Calif., with burial in Salem Cemetery near Zionsville.
