Jean M. Gunn

Zionsville — Jean Mitchell Gunn passed away peacefully on May 4, 2013, at the age of 87.

She was born Evelyn Jean Mitchell on Aug. 7, 1925, in Fredonia, Kan., to Emmett John Mitchell and Patricia Lee Duby. She spent her childhood in Kansas, Texas and Ohio, where she attended schools in the Diocese of Cleveland and graduated from St. Joseph Academy in 1943.

In 1944, she married Harry W. Gunn II (Junior) in Cleveland, Ohio, and the couple moved, along with their firstborn, Harry III (Hank), to Indianapolis in 1949. There they had two more sons, Jim and Tim, and lived in the growing suburbs of Indianapolis near Bonham and 34th streets.

Widowed in 1960, she obtained her real estate license and joined Carriage Estates Company, where she became a partner of the firm in 1968, serving as head of their property management department and manager of their Castleton office. She started her career in real estate and worked for many years at Carriage House Title Company. Throughout the 1970s she was active on many committees of the Indianapolis Board of Realtors.

Around 1980, she semi-retired from real estate, bought a sailboat and lived for several years on her boat, living out a dream of traveling, mostly in the Gulf of Mexico. She came back to Indiana and worked as a closing agent.

In 1985, her sons built her a house in the Village of Zionsville, where she lived with her family close by — all sons living within a few blocks, and most of her grandchildren in town.

Jean leaves behind one sister, Peggy Sanderson of Boston, Mass.; three sons, Hank (Darla), Jim (Jenny) and Tim, all from Zionsville; nine grandchildren, Katy, Karen (Zeke Berger), Ben, Luke, Adam, Darcy, Kevin, Kyle, Kelly, Katie, Mitchel and Laini; and two great-grandchildren, Juniper and Wyatt Berger.

She is preceded in death by her father, her mother and her husband.

Jean will be buried next to her husband, Junior, at Calvary Cemetery in Indianapolis, and there will be a Celebration of Life with family and friends on May 19.
