When I was about 10 or 11, I came across a word scramble in one of my coloring books. The puzzle had a picnic theme, and the answer to the scramble tatpoo phics was potato chips. For some reason, that scramble stayed with me. Even today, at least 30 years after that puzzle, when I think of potato chips my mind always goes back to tatpoo phics. It is a little bit alarming how often I think about potato chips.
I used to say I had never met a potato I didn’t like. Now I have met Yukon Gold potatoes, and I am not a fan, but I do still love most potatoes. One of my favorite preparations of spuds is in a plain old chip. Potato chips have been around, according to the Snack Food Association, for 159 years.
In 1895, potato chips became available in grocery stores. I would be willing to bet that 1895 was about when toddlers started having melt downs and throwing fits in the grocery because mom wouldn’t buy a tasty treat. I couldn’t find any data to back up that theory, though.
