Zionsville Times Sentinel
---- — St. Patrick's Day always inspires me to think about my Irish roots. I typically don't even celebrate the day, only acknowledging it by wearing my Kelly green Irish rugby shirt. But I love my Irish heritage and always wonder if my love of music and nature, my independence, loyalty to family and friends, inquisitiveness about people and places, and other traits have been passed down through my Irish genes. I've attempted to unfurl the leaves of the McCann family tree to see what bounty of nuts I might find. Unfortunately I got stumped at my great-great-grandfather, Jacob McCann. I've been unable to find any record of his birth or even his parents' names. He was born prior to birth record requirements, so I can't even be sure if he was the first of my McCann "grands" to be born in the United States or if he was born in Ireland and emigrated. See Wednesday's Times Sentinel for the full story.
