Shopping local makes for a green holiday

— Start talking finances and my eyes glass over and my mind fogs out. It’s like talking to an Eskimo about palm trees—total disconnect. But one thing I do know about economics is that shopping locally makes good sense.

Small Business Saturday, a promotion developed by American Express in 2010 to benefit independent and small businesses, has achieved remarkable support in its three years. The concept is to balance the effects of Black Friday and Cyber Monday during the Thanksgiving weekend, the official start of the holiday shopping season. Shoppers are made aware of the many artists/crafters, independent restaurants, and “mom and pop” businesses and that give character and uniqueness to a town.
