— Last week on the radio, the hosts were talking about when and how they received The Talk from their parents. The stories were as varied as the people involved in the discussion, and they brought back all kinds of memories.
For my talk, my mom decided to draw me a picture to explain the female innards. I don’t know why my mom decided to draw me a picture, because she had zero artistic ability. Whenever she drew a picture, she had to include labels so we would know what she had drawn.
Anyway, thanks to my mom and her lack of artistic ability, I believed for a long time that my ovaries were the size of chicken eggs. I often wondered how there was room in my body for anything besides girl stuff. Then I learned the truth. It shouldn’t have surprised me, given mom’s skill with a pencil, but it did.
In addition to the whole disproportionate drawing, my Talk with mom was that awful awkward that can only happen when the person giving the Talk is completely embarrassed by the content. You would think that she would have loosened up a bit with me, given that it was her fourth time at that particular rodeo.
