Little Eagles run in 5K race

This fall, third and fourth graders from Eagle Elementary had the opportunity to participate in the Eagle Running Club. It was a PTO sponsored club run by parents. The club met every Monday afternoon from September through October. Over thirty students participated in the club. The goal of the club was to learn how to become a better distance runner. Students were taught running tips, got great exercise and had fun.

The club began with participants running 15 minutes at the first meeting. Each week, five minutes was added to the total running time. By the third week, students were running over 2 miles. Some students and parents ran on Saturday mornings on the Zionsville Rail Trail. A couple of students even ran Zionsville’s “Hit the Bricks” 5K on Saturday, Oct. 3.

The final club meeting was an exciting Eagle Elementary 5K race, which was on Monday, Oct. 19. This race was 3.1 miles through Zionsville. Students proudly wore their Eagle Running Club T-shirts and received awards for first, second and third place. Top three males were Aaron Williams, Pace Weitkamp and Alex Paul. Top three females were Sophia Rigg, Meredith Mitchell and Maddie McKay. The first place male and first place female both finished with a time of 26 minutes.
