Community calendar for Oct. 3

Hoosier Village offers workshops

Hoosier Village, 5300 W. 96th St., will host several Alzheimer’s Association caregiver workshops. Hoosier Village can be reached at 873-3349.

• Becoming an Expert Caregiver — 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3. This session offers techniques for maximizing a loved one’s strengths and discusses verbal and nonverbal communication, coping with challenging behaviors, preventing wandering and more.

• Aging Safely in the Home — 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10. This session is for individuals caring for a loved one with dementia at home. It will provide tips for evaluating the environment for things that could cause injury as well as coping skills.


BCHD offers


The Boone County Health Department will have several opportunities for residents to receive flu and pneumonia vaccines.

Flu vaccines are $20 for adults, $30 for a high dose flu vaccine and $10 for children. Pneumonia vaccines are available for adults for $60.

Flu shots are available to homebound Boone County residents by calling 765-482-3942 option 3.

• 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, in the Zionsville Town Hall Community Room, 1100 W. Oak St.

• Senior Health Fair — 9 a.m. to noon Thursday, Oct. 11, in the Zionsville Town Hall Community Room, 1100 W. Oak St. Vaccines are available for adults only.

• 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, in the Boone County Health Department, 116 W. Washington St., Lebanon.


Homemakers Club sets meeting

Zionsville’s Extension Homemakers Club “Village Homemakers” will meet at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, at the home of Cindy Baker.

The program will be sewing Christmas stockings for Indiana’s soldiers.

Poetry on Brick Street Oct. 4

Poetry on Brick Street will present Eugene Gloria as the featured poet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, at Eagle Creek Coffee Co., 10 S. Main St., Zionsville.

    Each year, the Zionsville Times Sentinel publishes information on candidates for the primary election. Below you will find a list of each candidate's qualifications, as well as videos showing their responses to questions relating to their office.

    The following is a partial list of duties for the offices up for election:

    Superior Court II

    Indiana has 143 Superior Courts. Judges run under party banners for six-year terms. Superior Courts have roughly the same powers as Circuit Courts to try any kind of case, aind includes small claims and minor offense divisions.


    • Conservator of the peace
    • Take charge of the county jail and its prisoners.
    • Serve warrants, subpoenas and other forms of process
    • Collect delinquent state income taxes
    • Sell mortgaged property
    • Attend sessions of th County Council and Commissioners


    Board of Commissioners has three members from three districts serving four year, staggered terms.

    • Controling, cmaintaining and supervising county property.
    • Auditing and authorizing claims.
    • Receiving bids and authorizing contracts.
    • Supervising construction and maintenance of roads and bridges.
    • Issuing bonds or notes (with county council approval)
    • Recommending county salaries to the county council
    • Establishing animal shelters

    County Council

    The council has the financial power and serves as a check to the Board of Commissioners. The county is divided in to four districts, with one member from each district and three at large.

    • Fix the tax rate and impose the tax levy
    • Make appropriations to be paid by the county treasury
    • Reappropriate surplus fund
    • Fix salaries of officers, deputies assistants and other employees
