Noteworthies for Jan. 23

Residents named to dean’s list

Four Zionsville residents were named to the dean’s list at Hope College.

Sophomores Carl Deeg and Miranda Ulmer, junior Ann Hersey and senior Amelia Townsend were all named to the list.

To be named to the list, a student must have a minimum 3.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale.

Wiley named

to honors list

Zionsville resident June Wiley has been named to the honor roll list for Graceland University’s 2012 fall term.

To be named to the honor’s list, a student must have a GPA between 3.65 and 3.99 on a 4.0 scale.

Resident named to dean’s list

Zionsville resident Neal Shipley was named to the Augustana College dean’s list for the fall term.

Shipley is a senior majoring in sociology-social welfare and English.

A student must have a GPA of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale to be named to the list.

Residents among Butler grads

Two Zionsville residents completed their degree requirements in December from Butler University.

Eric Ellis graduated with a degree in English writing. Anne Regnier Arroyo graduated with a degree in education administration.

The two were among 106 students who graduated.

Krieble studies abroad

Zionsville resident Jordan Krieble studied abroad during the fall 2012 semester.

Krieble is a media, rhetoric and culture major at Butler University.

Samford grads

Zionsville resident Kathryn Marie Jackson graduated from Samford University during fall commencement.

Jackson earned a bachelor of science degree.

Williams named to dean’s list

Zionsville resident Calasia Williams was named to the Tennessee State University dean’s list.

Williams is majoring in arts and sciences.

The list names all students who have achieved a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Two named to dean’s list

Two Zionsville residents were named to the University of Evansville’s dean’s list.

Emily Denne, majoring in art, and Kaitlin Koenig, majoring in literature, were both named to the list.

The students made the list by achieving at least a 3.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale.

    Each year, the Zionsville Times Sentinel publishes information on candidates for the primary election. Below you will find a list of each candidate's qualifications, as well as videos showing their responses to questions relating to their office.

    The following is a partial list of duties for the offices up for election:

    Superior Court II

    Indiana has 143 Superior Courts. Judges run under party banners for six-year terms. Superior Courts have roughly the same powers as Circuit Courts to try any kind of case, aind includes small claims and minor offense divisions.


    • Conservator of the peace
    • Take charge of the county jail and its prisoners.
    • Serve warrants, subpoenas and other forms of process
    • Collect delinquent state income taxes
    • Sell mortgaged property
    • Attend sessions of th County Council and Commissioners


    Board of Commissioners has three members from three districts serving four year, staggered terms.

    • Controling, cmaintaining and supervising county property.
    • Auditing and authorizing claims.
    • Receiving bids and authorizing contracts.
    • Supervising construction and maintenance of roads and bridges.
    • Issuing bonds or notes (with county council approval)
    • Recommending county salaries to the county council
    • Establishing animal shelters

    County Council

    The council has the financial power and serves as a check to the Board of Commissioners. The county is divided in to four districts, with one member from each district and three at large.

    • Fix the tax rate and impose the tax levy
    • Make appropriations to be paid by the county treasury
    • Reappropriate surplus fund
    • Fix salaries of officers, deputies assistants and other employees
