Eagle grapplers start season on high note

It was a strong start to the season for the Zionsville wrestling team on Nov. 21. The Eagles produced five champions and seven finalists at their own Fendley Invitational, winning the team title 225-185.5 over second-place Frankfort. For the first tournament of the year, things went pretty well head coach Jared Williams said.

The Zionsville Lady Eagles had nearly a week to prepare for their HCC opener against Avon. They made the most of that time. Zionsville topped the Orioles 54-37 on Nov. 20, improving their record to 4-1 and 1-0 in HCC play.

Things couldn't have started much better for the Zionsville girls swimming team. The Eagles faced Noblesville on Tuesday, Nov. 17, and topped the Millers 137.5-48.5 while winning every event.

Tigers defense stifles Eagles

For the first 14 minutes of Saturday, Nov. 14’s match-up between Class 3A No. 4 Lebanon and Zionsville, the Eagles gave the host Tigers everything they wanted. But after playing to a stalemate for the first 14 minutes, the Tigers turned up the defensive pressure, and the Eagles couldn’t handle it. Lebanon out-scored Zionsville 13-0 in the final 2:03 of the first half, and pulled away throughout the second half in a 63-36 victory.

A 3-6 regular season record and winless 0-6 mark in Hoosier Crossroads Conference play means very little to Zionsville coach Pat Echeverria after Friday night. In what was likely the Eagles’ best game of the 2015 season Zionsville came roaring out to a 29-3 halftime lead en route to a 50-32 win over Class 5A No. 8 rated Decatur Central in the IHSAA Sectional 13 championship game.

Mission accomplished, history made

The mission for the Zionsville girls cross country team was clear from the start of the season — earn a way onto the podium at the state meet. Saturday, it was mission accomplished. The Eagles placed fifth overall at the state meet at the Lavern A. Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute, the school’s highest finish ever.

Zionsville senior Oliver Rigg has mostly been known as a track athlete in his time at Zionsville. On Saturday, he showed he could compete with the top runners in cross country too. Rigg placed 56th at the IHSAA State Meet, his final cross country race as an Eagle.

The Zionsville girls basketball team had an odd occurrence last season, not having a single senior on the roster. While the young Eagles had some growing pains during a 4-16 campaign last year, those lessons will pay off this year as all the players are back, plus some talented newcomers that have the Eagles excited about the new season.

Zionsville blows out Tech to advance

After five straight losses to close the regular season Friday night’s sectional semifinal win over Indianapolis Tech felt extra special for Zionsville. The Eagles were able to make some adjustments during the bye week and it led to big plays as they earned a 37-7 win over the host Titans to advance to the IHSAA Sectional 13 championship game.

Girls cross country returns to state

Carmel — All season long, the Zionsville girls cross country team has had one eye focused on the end of the year, with the goal of earning a top finish at the state meet on Oct. 31 in Terre Haute. All the preparations throughout the summer and fall were meant to put the Lady Eagles in a position to earn a spot of the podium when the dust had settled in the race.

Eagles end sectional drought

West Lafayette — The last time the Zionsville volleyball team won a sectional, the Eagles were a 3A school and volleyball matches were best of three sets without rally scoring. That all changed Saturday night. The Eagles won their first sectional title since 2001, downing McCutcheon 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-19) to claim the Sectional 7 trophy.

Brebeuf ends Eagles' run in state tourney

Early in the second half, everything was going the way the Zionsville girls soccer team needed to in order to complete a comeback against Brebeuf Jesuit on Saturday, Oct. 17. Trailing 2-0 at the half, the Eagles had a strong wind at their back, a large home crowd supporting it and scored an early goal to get within 2-1 with 30 minutes to play in the game.

Playing four teams ranked in the top-13 in the state in their seven previous matches, the Eagles had shown they could compete with the top teams in the state, but didn't have the results to show for it in going 3-4 heading into their regular season finale on Oct. 15 against Harrison.

The year of firsts continued for the Zionsville girls cross country team on Saturday, Oct. 17. After winning the school's first HCC Conference title earlier in the year, the Eagles added another new trophy to their case in winning the Ben Davis Regional title. It was the first in school history.

For 94 minutes on Wednesday night, Zionsville's junior goalkeeper Kelly Bachmann sat on the bench, cheering on her teammates in their regional semifinal against Avon. But when her number was called in the shootout, she was ready. Bachmann made a key save in the midst of the shootout and Alex Wendt scored the game-winning kick as the Eagles topped Avon 2-1 (4-3 on PKs).

With the clock winding down at Carmel's Murray Stadium, the score still remained 0-0. But just when it looked like the 80 minutes of regulation play wasn't going to be enough, Zionsville's Alex Wendt stepped up.

It wasn't a dream ending for the Zionsville girls golf team on Saturday, Oct. 3 at the IHSAA State Finals. After sitting in a tie for third after day one, the Eagles shot slightly worse on the second day, shooting a 359 and settling for a tie for seventh in the team standings.

The Zionsville boys tennis team continued to be the class of the Lebanon sectional on Monday, Oct. 5. For the 10th time in 11 years, the Eagles claimed the sectional title, downing Rossville 4-1.

When head coach Suzanne Rigg took over the Zionsville girls cross country team, she dreamed of taking the Lady Eagles to levels of success they had never had before. She did just that, taking the Eagles to their first two appearances in the state finals in her first two years. Now the Eagles have another first to put on their mantel.

Not only was it the Eagles sixth match in four days, but it was one before a big match with top-5 Hamilton Southeastern on Thursday. The Eagles were able to rise to the challenge, topping a tough Lebanon team 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-19) to improve to 18-2 on the year.

The odds were stacked against the Zionsville Lady Eagles soccer team on Thursday, Sept. 24, night. Not only were they facing their third top-4 team in the state in four days, but they were doing so with a rash of injuries that altered their starting lineup. And while the Eagles had been able to overcome those obstacles throughout the week, they were unable to against top-ranked Carmel.

Royals too much for Eagles on Homecoming

The final score may have looked better on paper at 35-21, but Class 6A No. 5 rated Hamilton Southeastern’s Hoosier Crossroads Conference win over Class 5A No. 9 rated Zionsnville was a TKO in the first round. The visiting Royals scored 28 points on four first quarter touchdowns and stunned the Eagles early, then let their defense control things the rest of the way before Zionsville scored three times in the game’s final eight minutes.

Patterson's blast bests No. 2 Brebeuf

The Zionsville Lady Eagles soccer team have shown they can play with the top teams in the state, but they were lacking the signature win so far in the 2015 campaign. That all changed on Monday, Sept. 21. Thanks to a second half goal from sophomore Erin Patterson, the 11th-ranked Lady Eagles beat No. 2 Brebeuf 1-0, giving the Eagles their best win of the season.

A back-and-forth affair Friday night between Hoosier Crossroads Conference rivals Noblesville and Zionsville came down to the very end at Hare Chevrolet Field in Noblesville. Noblesville kicker Andrew Little connected on an 18-yard field goal with 24 seconds left to give the host Millers a 23-21 victory over the Class 5A No. 8 rated Eagles.

Eagles past stern test from Brebeuf

If they didn't want to go to a make-or-break fifth game on Monday, Sept. 14, something needed to change for the Zionsville volleyball team at Brebeuf. After winning the third game to go up 2-1, the Eagles found themselves down 17-9 in the fourth game. But they were able to turn it around, winning 16 of the final 22 points to win the game 25-23 and win the match 3-1 (25-22, 24-26, 25-16, 25-23).

When the rain finally cleared off on Sept. 11, Zionsville head coach Pat Echeverria breathed a sigh of relief because he knew his Eagles would be able to take flight after all. In a game that was much more exciting than the score indicated, Zionsville notched their third win of the season downing the Brebeuf Braves 27-9 on the road.

The host Eagles, who cracked the top-10 this week at No. 8, opened Hoosier Crossroads Conference play by hosting No. 6 rated Westfield and both teams sported a spotless 2-0 record.

The Zionsville volleyball team came into Thursday, Sept. 3, night’s HCC match against Westfield flying high, having won their six matches of the year and not being challenged much in the process. That all changed Thursday night. Host Westfield proved to be a tough test for the Lady Eagles, and they handed the visitors a 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-22) loss.
