By Eric Smith/Times Sentinel writer
LEBANON — Boone County features three tough girls tennis teams, and Tuesday, April 22, saw the first matchup between two of them, as Lebanon hosted Zionsville.
The ninth-ranked Lady Eagles handed Lebanon its second loss of the season with a 5-0 victory.
“Zionsville is just extremely consistent. They play all year round,” Lebanon Head Coach Lisa Erwin said.
In No. 1 singles action, Zionsville senior Danielle Hansen won a hard-fought match over Lebanon senior Aly O’Conner 6-2, 6-0.
“They had some great, long points,” Zionsville head coach Pat Slama said of Hansen and O’Conner. “That makes for a very nice match ... both No. 1s are giving a nice battle.”
In No. 2 singles, Zionsville senior Margo Harrington defeated Lady Tiger senior Caroline Lariviere 6-0, 6-0. Lady Eagle junior Lauren Formulak won her No. 3 singles match over Lebanon sophomore Kelli Nelson 6-1, 6-1.
“(Nelson) has somewhat unorthodox strokes, but boy can she place them,” Slama said. “It just goes to show you that it’s how you use your talent you have to your advantage. I must commend her that she moved Formulak, who is a good steady player.”
The Zionsville No. 1 doubles team of junior Eileen Dinnin and junior Jesika Bays kept it going for the Eagles, taking down Lebanon junior Julie Ward and sophomore Elizabeth Henson 6-1, 6-0.
In No. 2 doubles, Zionsville senior Katie Thompson and sophomore Claire Mattison picked up a solid win over junior Emily Northcutt and freshman Maddy Ruch 6-0, 6-1.
“I was proud of the girls’ play,” Erwin said of the Lady Tigers. “They did well to stay with Zionsville on many points and rallies.”
The Lady Eagles also won each of the junior varsity matches. Lauren Dunn defeated Emily Brandenburg 8-0, Christine Miller beat Jessie Bridgeman 8-0, Keely Mawalt defeated Katie Kincaid 8-1, and Kaitlin Cannon defeated Jessie Bridgeman 8-1.
In doubles, Jessica Meteger and Alyson Herhuskey beat Meredith Erwin and MacKenzie Jones 8-5. Bridget Beehler and Mallory Krkosha took down Summer Brandenstein and Amanda Monn 8-0. Zionsville’s Alison Geraty and Samantha Rhodes defeated Savannah Cline and Abby Everett 9-7.
