BROWNSBURG — The Lebanon and Zionsville golf teams will have a good idea of how they match up against one another by the end of April. The teams’ schedules overlap for three consecutive matches, and it began with the immensely competitive Brownsburg Invitational at West Chase Golf Course on Saturday, April 26.
Zionsville played well against the stiff wind, and even stiffer competition. The Eagles finished seventh overall with a team score of 323, outshooting Center Grove and Hamilton Southeastern.
Sophomore Graham Singer led the way for the Eagles with a 78, while sophomore T.J. Pancake followed with a 79. Junior Aaron Cecil performed well for Zionsville by carding an 81, and freshman Tanner Rabb rounded out the Eagles’ score with an 85.
“We played a little better,” Zionsville Head Coach Steve Simmons said. “It’s not quite where we want to be yet, but we played smarter. Overall, I was pleased.”
The No. 15 Lebanon Tigers certainly made a statement in front of the state’s best, finishing in fourth place among the 20 teams in the hunt. With a team score of 314, Lebanon was edged by No. 3 Avon at 291, No. 16 Indianapolis North Central at 306, and No. 13 Lafayette Jeff at 311.
In the process, the Tigers outplayed four teams currently ranked higher than 15th. Lebanon outscored No. 8 Noblesville, No. 9 Center Grove, No. 10 Hamilton Southeastern, and No. 14 Terre Haute South.
Lebanon junior John Frisby and freshman Jake Dickerson fought through the windy conditions, each carding a 77 on the afternoon. Senior Andrew Frandsen played well with a 79, and freshman Dane Robertson posted a solid round of 81.
APRIL 28 AT LEBANON
The 15th-ranked Lebanon boys golf team hosted Zionsville and Brownsburg on a cold, rainy afternoon, Monday, April 28, at Ulen Country Club. The Eagles came out on top to edge the Tigers 163-165. The Brownsburg Bulldogs came in third in the three-way meet with a team score of 181.
Zionsville junior Jamie Baxter took medalist honors for the meet, finishing with a 39. His teammates sophomore T.J. Pancake and junior Aaron Cecil followed him up with a 41 apiece, and sophomore Graham Singer rounded out the Eagles’ scoring with a 42.
“Considering the conditions, we played relatively well,” Zionsville Head Coach Steve Simmons said.
Lebanon also played well, finishing just behind their county rivals. Junior John Frisby continues to play well, and led the way for the Tigers with a 40. Freshman Jake Dickerson contributed a round of 41 for Lebanon. Freshman Dane Robertson and senior Andrew Frandsen each posted a 42 on the blustery day. The Tigers are now 7-1 on the year.
This was the second of three consecutive meets featuring both Lebanon and Zionsville. The Tigers and Eagles finished fourth and seventh, respectively, among 20 teams at Saturday’s Brownsburg Invitational.
Both teams are scheduled to visit Carmel for the Crooked Stick Invitational April 29, where they will take on the likes of No. 1 Cathedral, No. 6 Carmel, No. 10 Hamilton Southeastern, and honorable mention-ranked Brebeuf Preparatory.
The teams will compete together for the fourth time in eight days Saturday, May 3, when they participate in the Lafayette Jefferson Invitational at Coyote Crossing Golf Course.
