Hoyer tackles All-Star game

INDIANAPOLIS - Zionsville’s Brian Hoyer spent last week on the campus of the University of Indianapolis in preparation for the North-South All-Star Game. He played for the South on Friday, July 18.

The South defeated the North, 34-14 at North Central High School.

The South scored on its first play in the first inning on a 65-yard touchdown pass from Adam Wiese of Perry Meridian to Tandon Doss of Ben Davis.

“It was a great week just to be with these guys,” Hoyer said. “A lot of these guys are going on to college to play.”

Hoyer will be attending Xavier, but won’t play football there. His major is undecided.

“I just thought it was a great experience,” Hoyer said. “It was a great way to end my high school career. I hope I represented Zionsville well.”

Hoyer didn’t start for the South, but totaled one tackle in the game.

“I thought I played OK,” Hoyer said. “Everybody has ups and downs throughout the game, but we alternated series and it was about equal playing time.”

Hoyer said it was different for him at the beginning of the week because most of the players on the team knew each other.

“I kind of came in as the new guy,” Hoyer said. “I got to know some of the guys through practice everyday.”

Hoyer said there was one day when the team practiced three times and the rest of the week they went two-a-day. He said it was right around April when he found out that he made the All-Star Team.

“I was really excited,” Hoyer said. “It was a great honor to be selected with all of these guys.”

Hoyer said that after having to build a complete team in under a week, one of the biggest things he took from the experience was team building.
