Sorensen sets school record as Eagles finish fourth

By Will Willems/Times Sentinel

CARMEL — Dylan Sorensen has done it again.

One year after setting the school record for 5K, the senior broke his own school record by 15 seconds, running a 15:22 on his way to winning the Flash Rock Invitational at the Northview Christian Church in Carmel, Saturday, Sept. 20.

His time also was the course record, which had previously been held by Cale Allen of Fishers.

“Dylan continued his great season with a great race plan that made it possible for him to get the victory against a very strong field,” Zionsville Head Coach Gabe Porras said.

Sorensen wasn’t the only Eagle who had a great day. The Eagles were fourth on the day, with their 97 points only 18 out of first place.

The average time for the Eagles was 16:24, the fastest in school history.

Sam Berger and Zan Siddiqi finished in 20th and 21st, coming in with identical times of 16:33.

Not far behind them was Graham Bixler, who finished in 26th with a time of 16:44. The Eagles fifth runner, Ryan Kelly, also finished in the top-30, coming in 29th. His time was just five seconds behind Bixler.

“Being a very large, competitive race, we stepped up very well,” Porras said. “I liked the way we moved up throughout the race and competed.”

The Eagles were one of five ranked teams in the race and hung in with all of them. They finished right around Fishers and Noblesville, leading up to what could be a preview of the top-three at the Hoosier Crossroads Conference Meet Oct. 4.

The Eagles will have one more meet before that, as they will compete in the Southport Invitational this Saturday, Sept. 27.

The Eagles also had the winner in the JV race as Jacob Ressler was the top finisher. The team finished in 12th overall.

Rounding out the scoring Eagles were Eric Petit (45, 18:37), Nick Brown (132, 19:45), Sam Bewley (148, 20:06) and Adam Collins (149, 20:09).
