Eagles earn Senior Night win against Fishers

By Will Willems/Times Sentinel

It wasn’t the start the Zionsville boys soccer team had hoped for in its Senior Night game against Fishers on Tuesday, Sept. 30.

The Eagles started all 10 of their seniors and had them play the first 20 minutes of the game. The problem was they had dug themselves a 1-0 hole by the time the regulars got in.

The regular starters scored early and often and defeated the Tigers 6-3.

“I thought it was a great win for us,” Zionsville Head Coach Mike Smith said. “It was supposed to be a night of celebration for this great group of seniors and we got everybody in and came out with a win.”

With 19 minutes remaining all the regular players entered the game. It took a little while for the first goal to go in, but A.J. Corrado was able to put the ball in the back of the net on an assist from Adam Ward with 5:47 remaining in the half.

The Eagles had the lead 25 seconds later when Jay Townsend was able to put another goal into the net to give Zionsville a lead they would not relinquish.

The Eagles built the lead to 4-1 early in the second half but the Tigers would not go away, scoring to make the score 4-2. The teams then traded goals to make it 5-3.

With just less than 10 minutes remaining, Corrado ended the scoring and Smith was able to put the seniors back in the game to finish.

“To put four years in at any school says a lot about the person you are,” Smith said. “We have had some success recently, but it hasn’t always been like that. These kids have helped build the program to what it is. All of them are such great kids.”

The Eagles looked to be back on track with their six goals.

The Eagles played well against the Greyhounds, earning a hard fought 1-1 tie in a battle of top-five teams on Saturday, Oct. 4.

Captain Harrison Petts scored the Eagles lone goal and led Zionsville with five shots on goal. It was his team-leading 29th goal of the season, putting him among the area leaders as well.

Corrado, Dylan Mares and Weston Wernsman each contributed two shots in goal in the game.
