Eagles cruise to Sectional title
By Will Willems/Times Sentinel
LEBANON — The Zionsville Eagles won the Lebanon Sectional Saturday, Oct. 4, defeating Western Boone 5-0 in what was more of a glorified practice than an actual match.
In the four matches that were actually played, Zionsville lost only one game.
“They followed the game plan that we had laid out,” Zionsville Head Coach Dan Layton said. “We came out focused and won our matches.”
The Stars forfeited at No. 3 singles because of a lack of players giving the Eagles an automatic 1-0 advantage.
It didn't take long for Zionsville to become 3-0 to clinch the sectional title.
The No. 1 doubles team of Nick Laconi and Joe Hammond defeated the No. 1 doubles team of Western Boone Colin Haney and Keith Carpenter 6-0, 6-0 in a little over 40 minutes. Shortly after they stepped off the court, they were joined by No. 1 singles player Andrew Kahn after he beat Drake Koontz 6-0, 6-0.
“Every match we have a goal, it changes every match,” Layton said. “We had a goal today to get done quickly no matter who the competition is. They came out focused, we finished up pretty quick.”
The No. 2 doubles team of Max Watson and Taylor Wong was next to finish, beating Brock Timmons and Luke Hayden 6-0, 6-0. The Stars got their lone game victory from Chase Cunningham at the No. 2 singles position as he lost to Zionsville's J.P. Dwyer 6-1, 6-0.
With Dunn having no opponent he practiced against the assistant coaches on a far court to keep fresh for Tuesday (Oct. 7) when the Eagles headed to the West Lafayette Regional.
“We should have another good Regional,” Layton said. “West Lafayette is usually there and they are a good team. I'm expecting some good things from my guys.”
Results from the Regional will appear in next week’s Times Sentinel, as the match was completed after press deadline.
