Zionsville wins 21 events against Roncalli

Pure domination described the results of the Zionsville boys and girls swim meet against the visiting Roncalli Rebels, Monday, Nov. 23.

Out of the 24 events on the evening, 21 were won by the Eagles squad with 10 by the girls team and 11 by the boys. In their first meet of the season, the boys’ only loss came during the 400 yard freestyle relay.

Zionsville swim coach Scott Kubly went with a slightly different lineup approach which paid off in the end.

“For the girls, I moved some of the kids around tonight and they all stepped up,” Kubly said. “Some of the younger kids, the freshmen had some lifetime best times for them especially for a Monday. With the boys, I didn’t put the traditional line up in and they did well especially for their first meet.”

Zoe Mattingly, Alex Brennan, Katie Newcomer and Keely Simonson all performed well for the Eagles, helping their team secure eight of their 10 victories on the night.

Six of their 10 wins overall saw the Lady Eagles obtaining the first and second spot. The 200-yard IM, the 50-yard freestyle and the 100 -yard backstroke saw Zionsville going No. 1, 2 and 3 respectively.

Mattingly led the team with three first place finishes in the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard backstroke and the third leg of the 200-yard medley relay on the night. Her success in the pool came as no surprise to coach Kubly.

“She is always ready to race,” Kubly said. “She is always on her ‘A’ game for the 50. She is very versatile. We can put her in any event and she is going to do well.”

Zionsville’s boys had a great night as well, only losing one of their 11 heats. Nick Torrance, Ian Boggs, Peter Lyon, Andrew Cardosi and Thomas Wimmer led the Eagles.

Out of their 11 races, nine of them saw Zionsville with a one-two punch at the end of the heat. Two of the events, the 200-yard IM and 100- yard breaststroke, saw the Eagles with the first three spots belonging to them.

Boggs led the boys team with four first place finishes in the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, 200-yard medley relay and 200-yard freestyle relay.

“Boggs’ breaststroke was a really good time for him,” coach Kubly said. “He started at a 1:02 but he was at a 1:03 all of last year so this was a great start for him.”

Both teams look to continue their strong start as they face Brownsburg Tuesday, Dec. 1, at Zionsville then two days later, a showdown with conference rival McCutcheon at home. Capping off their week is a trip to the Hall of Fame meet Friday, Dec. 4, and Saturday, Dec. 5, at Franklin Community High School.
