Eagles place fifth at state meet

Last week after the sectional, Zionsville head swimming coach Scott Kubly said that his girls had the goal of placing in the top-5 at the state meet. The Eagles did just that Feb. 14-15, placing fifth at the state championships at IUPUI with a team score of 137 points. Carmel was the runaway winner of the state title, winning their 28th-straight state championship with a score of 399 points. "I couldn't really ask for anything more," Zionsville head coach Scott Kubly said. "We came in Friday night and swam great. We had 13 swims and had 10 make it through and even the ones who didn't swam season bests times. We told them to relax and have fun and I think they did that today. I am very proud of their accomplishments." Alex Cleveland had the top finishes on the day for Zionsville. She placed second in both of her individual events — the 50- and 100-yard freestyles. She swam 22.68 in the 50 and 49.76. Cleveland briefly held the state record in both events in Friday's prelims, only to see them broken in the very next heat by Carmel's Amy Bilquist. Cleveland was part of two third-place relays, teaming with Taite Kitchel, Audrey Battisti and Gretta DeCoursey in the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 1:43.92 and with Kylie Mihok, DeCoursey and Kitchel in the 400-yard freestyle relay. "She came in at the beginning of the season and we had a goal of repeating in the 50-freestyle," Kubly said. "Then when she raced Amy in the Jr. National meet and we knew it was going to be tough to do it at the state meet. But she swam really well today."
