Eagles' Cleveland has strong showing at Junior Nationals

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Zionsville senior Alex Cleveland showed she could compete with some of the top girls in the nation Dec. 12 through 14 at the Speedo Junior Nationals Meet in Greensboro, N.C.

Cleveland swam personal bests in all three of her events.

In the 50-yard freestyle, in which she is the defending state champion, she placed third with a time of 22.55.

In the 100-yard freestyle, she placed sixth in a time of 49.75, and in the 100-yard backstroke she placed 50th in a time of 55.77.

Also participating in the nationals, was classmate Taite Kitchel, who placed 137th in the 100-yard breaststroke, swimming a time of 1:06.68.

Eagles split with FishersOn Tuesday, Dec. 10, the Eagles traveled to Fishers to take on the Tigers.

In a top-5 showdown, the No. 2 Tigers defeated the No. 5 Eagles 110-76. In the boys meet, the No. 21 Eagles defeated the No. 30 Tigers 110-76.

For the boys, Kyle DeCoursey won four events.

He won the 50-yard freestyle in 21.84 and the 100-yard freestyle in 47.55, hitting the state standard.

He was part of the winning 200-yard freestyle relay with Kyle Louks, Brock Brown and Ryan Bohl in a time of 1:31.28 and the 400-yard freestyle relay with Cameron Gelwicks, Josh Dull and Tyler Harmon in a time of 3:22.09.

The boys 200-yard medley relay team of Harmon, Brown, Bohl and Dull won in a time of 1:45.07. Also winning were Bohl in the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 5:00.68, and Harmon won the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 58.23.

On the girls side, Alex Cleveland and Taite Kitchel won three events.

Both girls were part of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team with Kylie Mihok and Gretta DeCoursey in a state standard time of 3:32.12.

She won the 50-yard freestyle in a state standard time of 23.40 and the 100-yard freestyle in a state standard time of 51.50.

Kitchel won the 200-yard IM in a state standard time of 2:05.35 and the 100-yard butterfly in a state standard time of 56.26.

The other two Eagle relays placed second but hit the state standard.

The 200-yard medley relay team of Cally Sampson, Kitchel, Audrey Battisti and Cleveland in a time of 1:49.62.

The 200-yard freestyle relay team of DeCoursey, Battisti, Anna Savery and Kylie Mihok placed second in a time of 1:40.73.

The Eagles host the their own invitational on Dec. 21.
