Zionsville places 2nd at conference meet

West Lafayette — Zionsville head swimming and diving coach Scott Kubly knew that it was going to be a tight battle for his girls swimming and diving team Saturday afternoon, Jan. 5, at the Hoosier Crossroads Conference swimming and diving meet.

But, even Kubly may not have known how close it was going to be. Hamilton Southeastern won the final relay, and held on to beat Zionsville by five points to claim the conference championship.

Zionsville entered the final relay down by four points, 319-315. The Eagles were seeded first in the relay, with a five-point edge in the diving as the event headed to the final round. A win would all but secured a team victory for the Eagles.

But, while the Eagles swam right at their seed time, Hamilton Southeastern, which was seeded third in the relay, dropped time from theirs and edged the Eagles.

“I wish for the girls that they could have won the event,” Kubly said. “They all had pretty good swims in that and that is all you can ask. We were right there at our seed time, but Southeastern did what they needed to do to win the meet.”
