Tigers top Eagles in Boone County battle

Lebanon — Last season, the Lebanon softball team capitalized on a couple Zionsville miscues to top its Boone County rival.

It was a little of the same Monday, April 8. The Tigers made the most of their opportunities by hitting two home runs and topped the Eagles 4-0 in Lebanon.

The win improved Lebanon’s record to 2-0 and dropped Zionsville to 0-2.

“Last year’s situation hurt us again — two pitches, four runs,” Zionsville head coach Lori Esparza said. “Alex (Stewart) pitched a great game today. She hit about 98 percent exactly where I wanted her to. They capitalized on those two missed pitches so kudos to Lebanon.”

After 3 1/2 scoreless innings, Lebanon got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Junior Lexy Britt hit the first pitch she saw from Zionsville senior Alex Stewart over the center field wall to give Lebanon a 1-0 lead.

Ashlyn Montgomery retired the Eagles in the top of the fifth before the Tigers went back to work.

Whitney Cosgray and Montgomery hit back-to-back one-out singles to put two runners on for Carly Greene, who belted a 3-run home run to give Lebanon a 4-0 lead.

“(Stewart) pitches with a lot of emotion,” Lebanon head coach Steve Smith said. “And when things are going her way she is really tough. ... We were able to get a couple of big ones today. She is good pitcher, and I like our girls’ aggressiveness.”

Zionsville had opportunities to score in the sixth and seventh but failed to capitalize.
