When Clark Tiller stepped off the ninth green at the Legends of Indiana Golf Course on June 18, it marked the end of the 2013-14 athletic seasons for Zionsville Community High School.
Looking back at the past 10 months, it was a successful year for Zionsville.
The teams combined to win eight sectional titles, three regional titles, a club state championship and two other top-5 finishes in state meets.
I have narrowed all the great moments into a top-10 recap of the year that was.
In no particular order: 10. The girls soccer teams’ sectional title.
The Zionsville girls soccer team proved in fall 2013 once again that they a top program. With more than 10 girls committed to play in college, the Lady Eagles spent most of the season toward the top of the polls while finishing 14-3-2 on the regular season. That didn’t matter in the sectional, when they were in the “Sectional of Death” with three teams ranked in the top-7 of the state.
The Lady Eagles dispatched top-ranked Carmel on their own field 1-0, then topped 7th-ranked Guerin Catholic 2-1 to advance to the sectional final against Westfield. Zionsville won that game, too, winning its second-straight sectional title.
9. Cross Country teams make history
It was a historic campaign for the Zionsville cross country teams.
Both teams won the sectional title, and the boys team followed that up with the school’s first ever regional title.
One week later, both the boys and girls teams qualified for the state finals. It was the berth in the state meet for the Zionsville girls, who finally were able to break through an extremely tough semi-state.
The girls placed ninth at the state meet, and the boys placed 16th. Both teams will return a large portion of their lineups from the last season in the fall, and the foundation has been set for success in future seasons.
