Zionsville baseball squad wins Trojan Classic in impressive fashion

Greenwood — The Zionsville baseball team showed why they are one of the top teams in the state Saturday, April 6, dominating two games to win the Trojan Classic at Center Grove.

The Eagles defeated West Vigo 11-3 in the first game of the day, and then topped host Center Grove 16-4.

“We are still shaking off the rust a little bit,” Zionsville head coach John Zangrilli said. “It has been a tough spring on everyone. We are finally turning the corner. We played well this weekend. Offensively, we got timely hits and were making good contact. We have a good nucleus back from last year, and we aren’t where we want to be at the end of the year, but we are continuing to make improvements to get there.”

West Vigo took a 2-0 lead after the first inning, but the Eagles scored one in the second and another in the third to tie the game.

Zionsville broke the game open with a four-run fourth and put the game away with a five-run fifth.

Parker Dunshee, Harrison Farber, Travis Tokarek and Evan Miller all had two hits in the game for Zionsville, while Ben Kocher, Drew Bertram and Grant Sloan all had a hit.

Dunshee, Tokarek, Bertram and Miller all scored two runs, while Tokarek and Sloan had multiple RBI games.

Kocher got the win, going four innings while giving up one hit and two run. Ryan Lindner gave up three hits and a run in the final three innings.
