Eagles falter in end vs. Orioles

Avon — The Zionsville boys basketball team did some nice things Friday, Jan. 25, against Avon in Hoosier Crossroads Conference action.

But at the end of the day, the Orioles made a few more plays than the visitors and prevailed 57-53, dropping the Eagles record to 7-7.

“Offensively, we did some good things,” Zionsville head coach Shaun Busick said. “We only had seven turnovers, we shot the ball well, we just didn’t take it to the hoop enough to get free throws. But we moved the ball around well.”

The one thing that Busick said he wanted to change was the perimeter defense.

Zionsville allowed Avon to shoot 9-of-11 from behind the arc.

“It is hard to beat them when they shoot 90 percent from three,” Busick said. “We have to close out better. That is going to be a real point of emphasis this week as we get ready to play Noblesville and Carmel.”

The Eagles led 12-9 after a quarter, but the Orioles came back in the second quarter to lead 25-22 at the half.

The game remained close throughout the second half, but the Eagles could never reclaim the lead.

Andrew Dakich led the Eagles with 22 points. He made 6-of-7 3-pointers.

“He is playing really well,” Busick said of Dakich. “He and Scotty Peñola are both getting the most out of their ability and are doing a great job leading the team. Andrew got out of shooting a slump, which is good to see. I really like where we are going as a team. The guys have a good attitude and are working really hard.”

Zionsville was playing without starting center Derrik Smits, who was out with an injury.

Busick said that it was unfortunate, but it would be a chance to get some experience for other players.
