It was a good weekend for the Zionsville golf team.
After winning the Sollman Invite Saturday, May 17, at Trophy Club, an event that featured 10 ranked teams, the Eagles place second in the just-as-tough HCC Meet on May 19, which featured five ranked teams in the toughest conference in the state.
On Saturday, the Eagles shot a 303 to win the title. Center Grove was second with a 305 and Columbus North was third with a 306.
"I think it was a little bit of a surprise to us," Zionsville head coach Steve Simmons said of the win. "I think sometimes we feel like we can compete with everybody, but we just never know from week to week if we are going to have enough to get over the top. Adam (Wood) had a unbelievable day, Clark (Tiller) matched his career low up until that point and we got a great effort from Michael Sollman, who shot a career low. On a tough golf course, with wet conditions, to beat 10 ranked teams that was a really good day for us."
Wood was the meet medalist with a 4-under 68. He was especially strong on the back nine, with two eagles and three birdies.
Tiller shot a 74 and Sollman had a 78. The final scoring Eagle was Clay Hypes with an 83.
Trent Pancake fired a 75.
On Monday at Bear Slide, the Eagles shot a 302 to place second. Hamilton Southeastern won the conference title with a 295.
