Zionsville’s girls’ volleyball team lost its focus after winning the first two games of the match Thursday, Oct. 4 at home.
In the end, Brownsburg won the last three games to win the match 3-2.
Junior Cyra Bammer said the team got a bit overconfident.
“I think we lost focus,” Bammer said. “I think we thought we beat them and they came back. We need to make sure we stay focused.”
The Eagles came out strong and won the first game fairly handily 25-15.
In the second game, the Eagles played tough enough to win 25-23.
But it was the third game the Eagles could not finish. They were up by as many as three points throughout the game.
Brownsburg took control of the game and with the game tied 23-23 scored the game’s final 2 points to win 25-23.
Zionsville coach Dawn Jones said the team fought hard, but the air left the building after the third game.
“I think we played well at the beginning,” Jones said. “I think our mind gets to us and we get in our own heads on how good we are. We played so well to win those two games. And when push came to shove in the third, we fought to do that. But in the fourth game, it’s almost like we felt the defeat before it happened, and we couldn’t pull through.”
The Bulldogs led throughout the fourth and fifth games, winning 25-23 and 15-7.
Jones said the team simply quit doing what it did to win the first two games.
“We started the match with our middles,” Jones said. “And we got away from that. I don’t know if that was passing or setting. But when we don’t establish our middle like we did in the first two games, it puts us on the outside and they can be set up and take on Maren Braun all together.”
