Sports Briefs for May 1, 2013


The Zionsville baseball team went 2-1 against HCC competition last week.

Thursday, April 25, the Eagles swept Hamilton Southeastern in a doubleheader.

In game one, the Eagles won 4-0 thanks to a four-run third inning.

Ben Kocher led the inning off with a walk and Parker Dunshee followed with a single. After each stole a base, Harrison Farber hit a two-run single.

Glen Collier followed with a walk, and Grant Sloan hit a two-run double to make it 4-0.

Dunshee got the win on the mound, going a complete game and allowing just five hits while striking out five.

In game two, the Eagles won 10-0 in five innings.

The Eagles went up 1-0 on a sacrifice fly by Farber in the first inning.

Zionsville burst the game open in the second. Sloan singled and advanced to third on a single by Cam Richey.

Drew Bertram singled home Sloan, and after a walked to Tyler Glenn loaded the bases, Travis Tokarek cleared the bases with a triple.

Tokarek later scored on a ground out by Kocher.

The final Eagle runs came in the fourth. Glenn walked and scored on a double by Tokarek.

Kocher walked, and Dunshee followed with a single to score Tokarek. Farber drove home Kocher with a ground out and Sloan singled home Dunshee to cap the scoring.

Sloan got the win, giving up three hits in five innings.

Monday, April 29, the Eagles lost to seventh-ranked Westfield 5-1.

The lone Eagle run came on a Tokarek RBI-single. Farber and Collier were both two for three in the loss.

Kocher took the loss of the mound, going seven innings and allowing 10 hits and striking out five.

But after losing 14-1 to Park Tudor on April 8, the Lady Eagles defeated Herron 14-1 on April 10 and Warren Central 15-2 on Saturday, April 12.

  • Golf team places 5th at Hall of Fame The Zionsville boys golf team tested themselves right out of the gate April 12, facing off against a strong field in the Hall of Fame Tournament at Rock Hollow Golf Course. The Eagles placed fifth in the tournament, shooting a team score of 333.

The Zionsville Eagles, ranked 13th in the state in Class 4A, went 3-1 for the weekend, beating Class 2A No. 2 Lafayette Central Catholic and Michigan's highly ranked Salinas twice. Their lone loss was a 7-4 defeat at the hands of top-ranked Cathedral.
