Zionsville continues sectional dominance

Lebanon — Even Mother Nature couldn’t stop the Zionsville girls tennis team from claiming its 13th straight sectional title Friday, May 17.

After a lengthy weather delay, the Eagles made quick work of Frankfort, 5-0, to win the sectional title.

“I was extremely proud of how well our players handled the weather situation,” Zionsville head coach Matt Moore said. “We had to take two extended delays during the match to allow the courts to dry. This is never easy on a player, but we maintained our focus throughout the afternoon.”

At No. 1 singles, Candice Park defeated Madison Jenkins 6-2, 6-0, and at No. 2 singles Lauren Ward defeated Hannah Jenkins by the same score.

Natasha Wujek made it a clean sweep of the singles’ spots, topping Madyson Corrie 6-3, 6-3.

In doubles play, Erin Cordill and Kelly Mattingly defeated Taylor Dillingham and Hannah Calvert 6-2, 6-0, at the No. 1 spot. In No. 2 doubles, Allison Gruninger and Lillie Heigl defeated Perla Castillo and Esmeralda Hernandez 6-0, 6-0.

“Our singles players did an excellent job with their footwork,” Moore said. “That allowed us to control our approaches and essentially the matches.”

The Eagles advanced to the regional, played May 21 in Plainfield. Full recap of the regional will be in the next edition of the Times Sentinel.
