Middle School sports roundup for Sept. 5


The following are the recaps for the two Zionsville middle schools for the week of Aug. 27- Aug. 31.


CROSS COUNTRY: The Eagles’ cross country runners ran at Riverside Monday, Aug. 27. Zach Stevens won the race for Zionsville. Lindsey Herhusky topped the Lady Eagles with a second-place finish. On Wednesday, Aug. 29, the Eagles ran at the Creekside Invitational.

Stevens was the top boys finisher, placing 10th, and Brooke Herhusky placed fourth the lead the girls.

GIRLS GOLF: The girls golf team won a three-way meet  Monday, Aug. 27, posting a score of 184 against Zionsville West’s 241 and Riverside’s 203. Avery VonDielingen led the way with a 43.

On Thursday, Aug. 30, the team topped Brownsburg West 176-217. Olivia Kreiger shot a 42.

VOLLEYBALL: Tuesday night, Aug. 28, the seventh-grade volleyball topped Tecumseh 25-12, 25-15. Sydney Bevelhimer, Katie Isenbarger and Megan Hoge led the Eagles with their serving. Thursday night, Aug. 30, the team topped Noblesville East. The Eagles had three great serving streaks from Gabby Kirkendol, Isenbarger and Dori Bammer to help guide the team to the win.

The eighth-grade volleyball team topped Tecumseh 25-15, 25-9. Thursday night, Aug. 30, the Eagles topped Noblesville East 25-16, 25-14. ZMS had outstanding serving and overall play from Megan Carr, Katie Norris, Payton White, Allison Cowan, Morgan Mateja, Haley Frye, Alex Leix, Emma Mourfield and Logan Manusky.

BOYS TENNIS: The ZMS boys tennis team defeated Zionsville West, 3-2, Wednesday night, Aug. 29. Nick Weaver won in singles, and the doubles teams of Elijah Hunt and Darron Stratton, and the team of Nick and Conor Broderick won. Zionsville West’s Tyler Harmon and Poom Sintananukul won.

On Thursday, Aug. 30, the Eagles topped Brownsburg West 5-0. Eddie Lin, Weaver and R.J. Brow all won singles matches. The teams of Hunt and Stratton and Nick and Conor Broderick both won 8-0.

FOOTBALL: The seventh-grade Eagles beat Brownsburg West Thursday night, Aug. 30, 27-22. Quarterback A.J. Cantrell threw for three touchdowns — the first to Tyler Milby, the second to Jacob Pressler and the third to Nick Nelson. Carson Canfield had a long touchdown run. The Eagles defense kept the Bulldogs scoreless for a half with great play by Bennett Clark, Jake Watkins, Sam Edgell, Tyler Milby and Nick Nelson.

Wood shot a 66 in the third and final round to overcome a four-shot deficit to get the victory by two shots over Nick Grubnich of Crown Point.

Tiller fired a 2-over 74, his best round at the state meet in his five rounds in high school, and finished with a two-day total of 7-over, 151. He placed 19th.

The Eagles shot a 310 at the Lafayette Jeff Regional on Thursday, June 12, but for the second-straight year, it was only good for fourth place, one shot short of advancement to the state finals.

The fourth-ranked Eagle squad had no problems getting through the challenge, shooting a 289 on June 9 to advance to June 12's regional.
