West Lafayette —
The Zionsville golf team had its best showing of the season Saturday, May 4, when they played in the Lafayette Jeff Booster Invite at Coyote Crossing Golf Course.
The 19th-ranked Eagles placed second overall with a season-best 298.
“It was a really good weekend,” Zionsville head coach Steve Simmons said. “The good news is that they played the way we expected to all year. For whatever reason we had a slow start to the season. But this weekend was really good and hopefully it continues.”
Adam Woods placed fourth overall with a 1-under 71 to lead the Eagles.
Zionsville had three other golfers break 80. Will Dixon shot a 73, while Clark Tiller and Clark Mattison shot 77s.
“Will Dixon told me a couple times last week and again Saturday that he was really close,” Simmons said. “He just needed to putt a little better. He switched putters late last week and it made a big difference. Will is probably the best athlete on the team and is one of the most competitive. I was very happy for him.”
“I talked to Clark Tiller (Monday), and he said a 77 is probably the highest he could have shot. He had three double bogeys down the stretch, so he could have easily shot a 74 or 75. Clark Mattison has been coming along the last two weeks and really played well Saturday.”
