ZMS 7th-grade wins two tourneys

The Zionsville Middle School volleyball team won a pair of tournaments the past couple of weeks.

The team won the Lafayette Tecumseh Tournament the weekend of Sept. 22, going a perfect 3-0.

The following weekend, the team defeated Westfield, Avon South, Brownsburg West and Zionsville West to go 4-0 and capture the Northside Conference Tournament title.

Heading into Monday. Sept 8’s match-up against Creekside, the Lady Eagles are 19-1 on the season. Zionsville ends the season Thursday, Oct. 11, with a crosstown match-up against Zionsville West Middle School in the Battle for the Nest game.

The seventh-grade match will begin at 5:30 p.m. with the eighth-grade immediately following. Both matches will be at Zionsville Middle School.

  • SPT - ZT040914 - Baseball photo 2 Eagles go 3-1 at Midwest Classic Some of the best high school baseball teams in the Midwest converged on Westfield on April 4 and 5 for the inaugural Midwest Classic. The Zionsville Eagles, ranked 13th in the state in Class 4A, went 3-1 for the weekend, beating Class 2A No. 2 Lafayette Central Catholic and Michigan's highly ranked Salinas twice. Their lone loss was a 7-4 defeat at the hands of top-ranked Cathedral.

But, despite a valiant second-half comeback attempted, the result Wednesday, March 26 was the same as last year's regional outcome — a loss to Brebeuf. This time, the Braves topped the Eagles 8-7, dropping Zionsville's record to 3-3.

Battling a light rain and windy conditions, the Eagles gave up five runs in the bottom of the first inning and ultimately lost 11-1 in five innings to Hamilton Heights on Thursday, March 27.

The Lady Eagles were victorious in both contests, topping Penn High School 10-8 in the morning, than South Bend St. Joseph’s 9-2 in the afternoon to improve to 3-2 on the season.

  • SPT - ZT032614 - Boys Lacrosse photo Eagles hang on for 5-4 win After seeing a four-goal lead nearly disappear, the Zionsville boys lacrosse team needed a big defensive stop if they wanted to improve to 3-0 on the season. They got just that, with goalie Ben Gould making a save in the final seconds to preserve a 5-4 win against Libertyville (Ill.) on Friday, March 21.

  • Youth movement for ZCHS softball With only one senior on the roster, it will be a new-look for the Zionsville softball team in 2014. Head coach Lori Esparza said that she is ready to coach this team.
