Runners have good showing at conference

Noblesville — The soggy conditions didn’t slow down the Zionsville cross country teams Saturday, Oct. 5, at the HCC meet held at Noblesville’s White River Elementary School.

The boys placed fourth with 90 points in the 10-team conference meet. Westfield won the meet with 48 points, Fishers was second with 80 points and Avon was third with 83.

“This is our first step into the tournament series, a bit of a dress rehearsal,” Zionsville head boys coach Gabe Porras said. “This is an important race; we want to do well for the school, but there is no finality to it for the varsity group. I think some of our guys learned some things that will prove to be valuable for the tournament. We ran well, and we saw another step in the right direction. There is going to be some close battles for us to advance where we want to in the state tournament, and it was good to see some of those teams today.”

After a lot of rain Friday night, Oct. 4, and early Saturday morning, the course was soggy and muddy.

Porras said that didn’t change the Eagles approach to the race.

“There really isn’t a whole lot to change,” Porras said.”As they were running, they had to look for the smart places to run, whether it was staying the same, or moving a couple steps over. They pretty much stayed the same in terms of letting the pace go, let it be as it is, attack the middle and close from there. It effects time, but in terms of how they competed, there isn’t a whole lot of difference.”

Ryan Cash had the Eagles best finish; he placed 10th in a time of 16:36.12.

Adam Corya placed 12th in a time of 16:38.57, two seconds ahead of teammate Oliver Rigg, who placed 13th.

All three runners earned All-HCC recognition.
