ZUMC pre-school enrollment begins

The Children’s Learning Program Pre-school at Zionsville United Methodist Church, 9644 Whitestown Road, is enrolling children age 1 through kindergarten for the 2008 summer session, which runs for eight weeks, June 3 to July 24. Children can attend from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays or both days. Call Carol Farney or Kristy Williams at 873-5706 for more information.



Zion Nature Center

offers activities

The Zion Nature Center, 690 Beech St., will have several classes and events this month. Call the nature center at 873-8950 or visit www.zionnaturecenter.org for more information or to register for classes.

• Garden Design — 7 p.m. Thursday, March 27. Adults. Myrene Brown will present a program which focuses on helping participants determine their favorite style of garden. The guidelines of good garden design will also be discussed. Free. Registration is required.

• Animal Adventures: Snakes — 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, March 28. Ages 3 to 6. The librarians from the Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library and the naturalists from the Zion Nature Center join together to share stories and facts about snakes. Meet at the library at 1 p.m. for story time then walk to the Zion Nature Center to learn more and see some live snakes. Free. Registration is required.

• Creature Feature: “Indiana Jim’s Reptile Experience” — 2 p.m. Sunday, March 30. All ages. Indiana Jim will introduce live Indiana reptiles and amphibians as well as some exotic species found around the world. This will be an interactive and educational “creature feature.” Free.

• Green Up Day -- 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, all ages. Enjoy spring and get some exercise while doing community service. Attendees will help remove garlic mustard, an invasive plant, which prevents native wildflowers, trees and shrubs from growing in our forests, parks and yards. Meet at the Zion Nature Sanctuary outdoor pavilion.

• Purple Martins -- 7 p.m. Thursday, April 3. Adult program. Roger Lee, a member of the Central Indiana Purple Martin Association, will present a program on North America’s largest swallow. Kathy and Dave Williams of Wild Birds Unlimited will also be available to answer questions about these amazing birds. Free.

• Under-the-Sea -- 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, April 5 and 6. All ages. Marine biologist Gerry Smith will introduce some of the resident under-the-sea creatures in our marine aquarium. Make under-the-sea crafts to take home. Free.



Community theater presents Williams’ play

“The Glass Menagerie,” Tennessee Williams’ most personal “memory play” about a family struggling with its past and future will be performed by the Center Stage Community Theatre of Lebanon at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays from March 28 through April 12; and at 2:30 p.m. Sundays, March 30 through April 13, in the theater, 604 Powell St., Lebanon. Beekeepers to meet

SullivanMunce hosts spring break camp

The SullivanMunce Cultural Center will host “The Magic of Color,” a spring break camp, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily from Monday, March 31 to Friday, April 4. Cost is $180 for members and $195 for non-members. Children will explore the magic of color using prisms, color wheels and flashlights. They will mix their own paint, create sculpture from found objects and make clay and ceramic vessels. Snacks are provided; students should bring a sack lunch with a drink each day. Community theater opens auditions

The Center Stage Community Theatre of Lebanon will have auditions at 7 p.m. Monday, March 31, and Tuesday, April 1, for the comedy “Those Crazy Ladies in the House on the Corner” by Pat Cook. Parts are available for five women and four men; auditioners will be asked to read from the script.

Shepherds to meet April 1

The Zionsville Shepherds will meet at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 1, for lunch and conversation at the American Legion Hall, 9950 E. 600 S.

Restoration project on Garden Club agenda

The Village Garden Club will meet at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 1, at the Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library, 250 N. Fifth Street. Stephanie Frischie will present on “Kankakee Sands: A Prairie Restoration.” Frischie is a seed collection manager for the project. Newcomers are welcome.



Welcome spring with Gardenfest

Gardenfest, hosted by the Boone County Master Gardeners, will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 5, at the Boone County Fairgrounds, 1300 E. County Road 100 South, Lebanon. Free trees will be given to attendees from the Indiana Soil and Water Conservation’s “Plant a Million Trees” project. Blood drive needs donors

The Blood Bank of Indiana will be available from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, for a blood drive at Zionsville Christian Church, 120 N. Ninth St. Call the church office at 873-5301 for more information.

The Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library, 250 N. Fifth St., has several upcoming events. Registration is required for each children’s class and some adult programs. Call 873-3149 to register.

• Harry Potter Ultimate Trivia Quest: Part II — 10 a.m. Saturday, April 12 for ages 7 to 9, and 1 p.m. for ages 10 to 13. Participants will divide into teams and try to beat the clock in answering Harry Potter Trivia questions. Refreshments will be served and prizes awarded.

• Foster Chicken Care Class — 3 p.m. Sunday, April 13. Ages 7 and older. Provide a foster home for the chickens hatched at the library. Before a participant can take a chick home, he or she must attend the class with a parent to learn about the care of chicks and pass a test.



Rent a garden plot

The Zionsville Parks Department is offering garden plot rentals, at $20 per plot, in a lot behind the Zionsville Fire Station on Ford Road. The plots, 20 by 20 feet, will be tilled and water will be available. Sign up between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the Zionsville Town Hall, 1100 W. Oak St. The plots will be ready for planting by May 15 or before if weather cooperates. Call the Zionsville Parks and Recreation Department at 733-2273 for more information.
