Blood drive needs donors
The Blood Bank of Indiana will be available from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, for a blood drive at the Zionsville Christian Church, 120 N. Ninth St. Call the church office at 873-5301 for more information.
Boone County LCC to Discuss Underage Drinking
Boone County Local Coordinating Council presents a panel of law enforcement experts, students and a retailer to discuss underage drinking in Boone County. The area has had a number of drinking-related incidents including last summer’s Trudeau-hosted graduation party, several alcohol-related crashes and a recent underage drinking party bust.
The event is 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 12, at the Shelter House in Lebanon Memorial Park (130 E. Ulen Drive). Refreshments will be provided.
The panel includes Boone County Prosecutor Todd Meyer, Boone County Sheriff Ken Campbell, Lebanon Chief of Police Tom Garofollo, Kork & Keg owner John Cunningham, and two young people -- one who was an underage drinker and one who has chosen not to drink.
Lisa Hutcheson, chairwoman of the Boone County LCC and director of the Indiana Coalition to Reduce Underage Drinking, will moderate.
Participants may also vIew the “This Place” DVD to see alcohol through the eyes of children, ask questions of the panel members and learn how to help kids make responsible decisions.
The program is part of the Boone County YMCA Healthy Kids Day and is free and open to the public. The forum will be a part of the “Ticket to Health” with a stamp awarded to booth visitors. Prizes will be awarded.
Zion Nature Center

The Turtles Are Awake — 11 a.m. Saturday, April 12. All ages. Come meet our resident box turtles, learn some facts and observe their hungry appetites after a long winter. Optional turtle crafts. Free.
Butterflies and Moths — 2 p.m. Sunday, April 13, Ages 6 and older. Local entomologist John Thieme will talk about the remarkable lives of butterflies and moths, and will have many pinned specimens on hand. Discover the important impact these insects have on the world. Make butterfly crafts to take home. Free.
Animal Adventures: Worms — 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, April 18. The librarians from the Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library and the naturalists from the Zion Nature Center join together to share stories and facts about worms. Meet at the library at 1 p.m. for story time then walk to the Nature Center to learn interesting facts and see live worms. Call 873-3149 or visit www.zionsville.lib.in.us. to register. Free.
Z’Green Fest — Noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, April 20. Celebrate Earth and Arbor Day at Zionsville’s Second Annual Z’Green Fest. Discover the earth from the inside of a 20-foot earth balloon, see live birds of prey and enjoy live music. Other activities include interactive education exhibits, guided hikes, farmers market, silent auction, raffle, food and fun. In case of rain, the event will take place in the Eagle Elementary gymnasium, 350 N. Sixth St.
The Animals of Beatrix Potter — 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, April 26 and 27. Ages 5 and older. Learn about Squirrel Nutkin and his friends as they come to life through the imagination of author and conservationist Beatrix Potter. Create your own storybook of the friendly creatures in and around the Zion Nature Center.
Nature Hike — 2 p.m. Saturday & Sunday May 3 and 4. Take an exciting hike in nearby Zion Nature Sanctuary and enjoy the sights and sound of spring. Come discover the beautiful wildflowers, birds, insects, mammals, trees and other wild things happening there! Free.
Orchids — 7 p.m. Wednesday May 7 (Adults) Michael Hinshaw will present a program on orchids. Hinshaw is a member of the Central Indiana Orchid Society and has more than 25 years of experience growing orchids. The presentation will address the selection, care and prevention of disease in the more common, readily available orchid varieties. Attendees will also see how to repot phalaenopsis orchids. One lucky person will draw the winning ticket to take one of the beautiful orchids home.
Puppet Show: “Clean and Green” 1 p.m. Saturday, May 10 (Ages 3 & up). Miss Diane and her Puppet Pals will present a magical show about recycling in Playland.
Decorate a Flower Pot — 2 p.m. Saturday & Sunday May 10 and 11 (ages 4 and older). Custom decorate a flowerpot and plant some flower seeds for a great Mother’s Day gift. We will have all the materials. Kids provide the creativity. $2 fee.
Frogs and Toads — 2 p.m. Saturday & Sunday May 17 and 18 (ages 6 and older). It’s that time of year again, and the frogs are calling! Come to this presentation about Indiana’s frogs and toads and learn all about local frogs and their specific calls. See several live species! Free.
“Everything Ducky” — 2 p.m. Saturday & Sunday May 24 and 25 (ages 5 and older). Learn about ducks around Indiana. There will be a live duck at the center, allowing you to come into close contact with these web-footed creatures. Free. Duck crafts available afterwards.
Hummingbirds — 2 p.m. Saturday May 31 (ages 5 and older). Learn fun facts about hummingbirds and how to attract them to your yard. Free. Optional hummingbird crafts will be available.
IT’S EASY TO BE GREEN! exhibit — The newest interactive exhibit will show you new ways to be Earth-friendly. Discover the makings of an “organic garbage disposal,” play Eco-Wheel, and learn about your “carbon footprint.” Green crafts and games make this exhibit fun for the whole family. This exhibit is generously sponsored by the Rotary Club of Zionsville and will be on display through August.
4-H “Share the Fun” contest entries due
The Boone County 4-H will host its annual Share the Fun contest Thursday, April 10. Entries are due April 7 and forms are in the 2008 4-H handbook or at www.ibccn.org/ces. Village Arts Club talks flowers

Reception to mark new SullivanMunce exhibit
An opening reception will kick off “Life Canvas: The Words of Art and History,” an exhibit running simultaneously at the P.H. Sullivan History Museum and the Munce Art Center April 12 to June 17. The reception will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, April 11, at the center. The art center will feature a juried art exhibit, with guest painter Lois Main Templeton. “Examining History through the Art of Calligraphy,” an exhibit by the Calligraphy Guild of Indiana, will be featured at the cultural center. Hands-on activities, events and special programming will take place throughout the Life Canvas exhibition. From noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 19, Lois Main Templeton will read her new children’s book “Who Makes the Sun Rise?” and lead a bookmaking workshop. From 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, April 25, Soyong Kang-Partington, a ceramicist, will speak at “Conversations about Art.” Call 873-6862 to reserve a spot.

Harry Potter Ultimate Trivia Quest: Part II — 10 a.m. Saturday, April 12 for ages 7 to 9, and 1 p.m. for ages 10 to 13. Participants will divide into teams and try to beat the clock in answering Harry Potter Trivia questions. Refreshments will be served and prizes awarded.
Foster Chicken Care Class — 3 p.m. Sunday, April 13. Ages 7 and older. Provide a foster home for the chickens hatched at the library. Before a participant can take a chick home, he or she must attend the class with a parent to learn about the care of chicks and pass a test.
Circle of Knowledge — Sunday, April 13 to Saturday, April 19. Celebrate the freedom to read and the contributions of the nation’s libraries and library workers. Enter a drawing for a basket loaded with the latest page-turners and delectable treats.
Presentation/Display: Table Toppers — 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 15. All new, stylish settings for homes created by Zionsville’s Sandy Butler of Butler’s Pantry and Drew Kogan of Antique Lighting.
The Indianapolis Motor Speedway: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow — 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 16. Get a picture taken with an Indy car in the Fifth Street parking area. Then join representatives from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in a lively presentation on the history of the track. Enjoy a short video, ask questions and receive free racing memorabilia.
Wii Play Games — 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, April 17, in the Teen Area, second floor. Grades 6 to12.
ZBOP to raise funds with garage sale
The Zionsville Band and Orchestra Patrons will host a garage sale from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, April 12, at the Zionsville Town Hall. The sale will include adult, teen and children’s clothing, sports gear and household items. All proceeds will go toward ZCHS instrumental programs. Call Brian Mercer at 873-8629 for more information.
Shepherds slate annual meeting
The Zionsville Shepherds will celebrate its 25th anniversary on Tuesday, April 15, in the Fellowship Hall of the Zionsville Christian Church, 120 N. Ninth St. The group will meet at 11:30 a.m., with lunch served at noon. Following lunch, church minister Dr. William C. McGraw will speak.

Sorority hosts garden party
Psi Iota Xi’s Garden Party is set for 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 24, at Rail Trail Gardens, 4102 S. County Road 875 East. The event will feature “Container Gardening,” presented by Mike Cline of Rail Trail, and “Tablescapes,” presented by Sandy Rogers of The Butler’s Pantry and Drew Kogan of Kogan Antiques and Lighting.
Tickets are $15 per person and include food and beverages provided by Carolina Grill, El Rodeo, My Sugar Pie, Patrick’s Kitchen and Plum’s Upper Room. A Zzzestpresso Coffee Bar sponsored by Bentley Zionsville will also be featured and door prizes will be awarded. Tickets are available at Butler’s Pantry, Kern Brothers Shoes and Rail Trail Gardens. Proceeds benefit the Summer Speech and Hearing Clinic, Riley Cochlear Implant Research and the Zionsville arts community.

Penny Putters slate luncheon
The Zionsville Penny Putters ladies golf league opening season luncheon will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 30, at Old Dominion Clubhouse, 201 Dominion Dr. The nine-hole league will play on Wednesdays from May 7 through Sept. 24 at the Zionsville Golf Course.

Family History 101
Are you interested in learning more about your family history but unsure about how to begin the process? Then join Mary Kraeszig, SullivanMunce Cultural Center library director and genealogist, from 10:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 3 at the center, 205-225 W. Hawthorne St. Ms. Kraeszig will give an overview of the sources you can use to document your family history, including birth, marriage, death, census, land, cemetery and church records, wills and obituaries. Genealogy software options and online databases will also be discussed. Adults and teens, ages 16 and up; teens aged 13-15 are welcome to attend with an adult. Relay for Life gears up
Relay For Life of Zionsville is June 20 to 21 in Lions Park. This 24-hour event honors cancer survivors and caregivers, raises funds for research and patient services and educates the public about cancer and its prevention.

Zionsville grads to reunite
The second Zionsville High School All Class Reunion is set for 7 p.m. to midnight Saturday, July 26, at the Palomino Ballroom, 481 S. County Road 1200 East near Zionsville.
All former students (ages 21 and older) as well as current and former teachers, coaches, administrators and staff are invited to attend and may bring one guest or spouse. Admission is free to all paid Zionsville Alumni Association members as well as retired teachers, coaches, administrators and staff. The cost is $15 for non-members. ZAA membership is available to everyone through various categories and starts at just $10 per year. Visit www.zionsvillealumni.org for membership information.

County offers vaccines
The Boone County Health Department offers affordable vaccines to all Boone County children, with services available in both Lebanon and Zionsville. Please bring a current shot record to each appointment. Evening appointments are available.
The cost is $6 per visit for school-required vaccines. Prices vary for adult vaccines.
Immunizations contain vaccines that protect your child and our communities from diseases such as measles and whooping cough. Children should receive their primary series of vaccines by 2 years of age. Booster doses are then given between 4 and 6 years of age. The booster vaccines are often referred to as “kindergarten shots.”

Club invites members to join Fitness Walks
The Newcomers & Friends Club of Zionsville (formerly known as the Welcome Wagon Club of Zionsville) is opening its Fitness Walking Groups to new members. The group makes exercise fun by walking and talking on the Zionsville Rail Trail with two weekly fitness walks; one meets on Tuesdays at 9 a.m. and the other on Thursdays at 8:30 a.m. Participants walk for an hour, and meet for coffee afterward on Tuesdays. All walkers are welcome.
