programs
The Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library, 250 N. Fifth St., has several upcoming events. Registration is required for each children’s class and some adult programs. Call 873-3149 to register.
• The Indianapolis Motor Speedway: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow — 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 16. Get a picture taken with an Indy car in the Fifth Street parking area. Then join representatives from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in a lively presentation on the history of the track. Enjoy a short video, ask questions and receive free racing memorabilia.
• Wii Play Games — 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, April 17, in the Teen Area, second floor. Grades 6 to12.
• Animal Adventures: Worms — 1 p.m. Friday, April 18, ages 3 to 6 with parent. Meet at the library for storytime fun, then walk to the Nature Center to learn about the real animals that live there. Registration is required.
• Shadow Box Theater — 4 p.m. Friday, April 18, ages 3 to10. Shadow Box Theater is a unique combination of storytelling and puppetry. Come sit in the dark, watch and listen as we “tell” stories with lights and shadows. Registration required.
• Giant Pumpkin Growing Contest — 11 a.m. Saturday, April 19. Listen to a story about growing a pumpkin and leave with a special pumpkin seed, gardening tips and enthusiasm to grow a pumpkin. In October, attendees will bring back the biggest, funniest, ugliest or smallest pumpkin in Zionsville. Registration is required.
• Circle of Knowledge — Now through Saturday, April 19. Celebrate the freedom to read and the contributions of the nation’s libraries and library workers. Enter a drawing for a basket loaded with the latest page-turners and delectable treats.
• Egg hatching and Web Cam Week — Monday, April 21 to Saturday, April 26. The Purdue hatchery returns. Visit the hatching chicks in person or watch by Web cam, available 24/7 at www.zionsville.lib.in.us.
• Baby Chicks Q & A — 2:30 p.m. Monday, April 21. Ages 3 to 12. Doug Akers, Boone County Extension educator, will be on hand to answer questions about the development, incubation and care of chickens and ducks. Learn more about our chick-hatching project. Registration is required.
• Game Night — 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, for ages 4 to 6 or Thursday, April 24, for ages 7 to 10. Turn off the TV and tune into some fun new games. Presented by Earth Explorers. Registration is required.
• Booktalk: “The 500 Festival Mini-Marathon: A Mini Splendored Thing” — 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 22. Author Patty Hagen will present a short history of the 500 Festival Mini-Marathon. Zionsville residents will share anecdotes and personal stories of running in the mini. Book sales and signings will follow.
• Intro to Microsoft Publisher — 6:45 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, Computer Lab B. Adult program. Learn how to create flyers, brochures and newsletters using Publisher. Participants must be comfortable on the computer and using Microsoft Word.
• Summer celebration spring cupcakes — 1 p.m. Friday, May 2. Ages 3 to 6. Celebrate the coming of summer by creating spring cupcakes. Presenting is Sabrina Gossett of HIP Studios. Registration required.
Woman’s Club to meet
The Zionsville Woman’s Club will meet at 1 p.m. Friday, April 18, at the home of Linda Elliott. Suzy Herring will give the program.

• Animal Adventures: Worms — 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, April 18. The librarians from the Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library and the naturalists from the Zion Nature Center join together to share stories and facts about worms. • Z’Green Fest — Noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, April 20. Celebrate Earth and Arbor Day at Zionsville’s Second Annual Z’Green Fest. Discover the earth from the inside of a 20-foot earth balloon, see live birds of prey and enjoy live music. Other activities include interactive education exhibits, guided hikes, farmers market, silent auction, raffle, food and fun. In case of rain, the event will take place in the Eagle Elementary gymnasium, 350 N. Sixth St.
• The Animals of Beatrix Potter — 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, April 26 and 27. Ages 5 and older. Learn about Squirrel Nutkin and his friends as they come to life through the imagination of author and conservationist Beatrix Potter. Create your own storybook of the friendly creatures in and around the Zion Nature Center.
• Nature Hike — 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday May 3 and May 4. Take an exciting hike in nearby Zion Nature Sanctuary and enjoy the sights and sound of spring. Come discover the beautiful wildflowers, birds, insects, mammals, trees and other wild things happening. Free.
• Orchids — 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 7. Adult program. Michael Hinshaw will present a program on orchids. Hinshaw is a member of the Central Indiana Orchid Society and has more than 25 years of experience growing orchids. The presentation will address the selection, care and prevention of disease in the more common, readily available orchid varieties. Attendees will also see how to repot phalaenopsis orchids. One lucky person will draw the winning ticket to take one of the beautiful orchids home.
• Puppet Show: “Clean and Green” — 1 p.m. Saturday, May 10. Ages 3 and older. Miss Diane and her Puppet Pals will present a magical show about recycling in Playland.
• Decorate a Flower Pot — 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday May 10 and May11. Ages 4 and older. Custom decorate a flowerpot and plant some flower seeds for a great Mother’s Day gift. We will have all the materials. $2 craft fee.
• Frogs and Toads — 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday May 17 and May 18. Ages 6 and older. It’s that time of year again, and the frogs are calling. Come to this presentation about Indiana’s frogs and toads and learn all about local frogs and their specific calls. See several live species. Free.
• “Everything’s Ducky” — 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday May 24 and May 25. Ages 5 and older. Learn about ducks around Indiana. There will be a live duck at the center, allowing participants to come into close contact with these web-footed creatures. Free. Duck crafts available.
• Hummingbirds — 2 p.m. Saturday May 31. Ages 5 and older. Learn fun facts about hummingbirds and how to attract them to your yard. Free. Optional hummingbird crafts will be available.
• IT’S EASY TO BE GREEN! exhibit — The newest interactive exhibit will show participants new ways to be earth friendly. Discover the makings of an “organic garbage disposal,” play Eco-Wheel, and learn about a “carbon footprint.” Green crafts and games make this exhibit fun for the whole family. The exhibit will be on display through August.
SullivanMunce exhibit open
“Life Canvas: The Words of Art and History,” an exhibit running simultaneously at the P.H. Sullivan History Museum and the Munce Art Center is now open and will run to June 17. The event is designed to blend and explore the worlds of art and history through words. The art center will feature a juried art exhibit, with guest painter Lois Main Templeton. “Examining History through the Art of Calligraphy,” an exhibit by the Calligraphy Guild of Indiana, will be featured at the cultural center. Hands-on activities, events and special programming will take place throughout the Life Canvas exhibition. From noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 19, the center will have family activities, and Lois Main Templeton will read her new children’s book “Who Makes the Sun Rise?” and lead a bookmaking workshop. From 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, April 25, Soyong Kang-Partington, a ceramicist, will speak at “Conversations about Art.” Call 873-6862 to reserve a spot.
Legion post cooks up pizza
The American Legion Post No. 79 Ladies Auxiliary’s monthly pizza night will be from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, April 18, at the legion post, 9950 E. C.R. 600 South. Pizza, BBQ pizza and bread sticks will be served. Just $9 for a pizza with any or all toppings.
4-H announces annual barbecue
The annual Boone County 4-H chicken and pork chop barbecue will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, April 19, at the Boone County 4-H Fairgrounds. Tickets may be purchased from any 4-H member or at the Boone County Extension Office for $6.50 in advance or $7 at the door. The event is held in conjunction with the Boone County Chamber of Commerce Home Show. All proceeds from the dinner are earmarked for major renovations and improvements of the fairgrounds. The barbecue dinner will include either half a barbecued chicken or a large smoked pork chop, baked beans, potato chips, applesauce, bread and butter, and a beverage. The Extension Homemakers will offer dessert for an additional cost.
Run, have fun
The Zionsville Fun Run will be from 11 a.m. to noon Sunday, April 20, and begins at the basketball court behind Eagle Elementary School. The fun run is free and open to runners and walkers of all ages. The 2.8-mile cross country course is made up of five loops of just more than 1/2 mile each and runs through the woods behind the school. The run may be used as a qualifying event for anyone in fourth grade or younger who wishes to participate in the Zionsville Anti-Mini Marathon on May 3. Diabetic and blood pressure tests available
The New Hope Christian Church and Witham Health Services will offer diabetes and blood pressure screening from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, April 21, at the church’s fellowship hall, 5776 S. ZCHS band and orchestra sells gourmet sauces
April is gourmet month for Market Day, a fundraising program for the Zionsville Community High School band and orchestra groups. The organization will sell specialty gourmet sauces and mixes that will be available only this month. Order forms are available at the Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library or at www.marketday.com, account No. 5941. Order forms are due April 22 and online orders are due April 23. Sorority hosts garden party
Psi Iota Xi’s Garden Party is set for 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 24, at Rail Trail Gardens, 4102 S. County Road 875 East. The event will feature “Container Gardening,” presented by Mike Cline of Rail Trail, and “Tablescapes,” presented by Sandy Rogers of The Butler’s Pantry and Drew Kogan of Kogan Antiques and Lighting.
Tickets are $15 per person and includes food and beverages provided by Carolina Grill, El Rodeo, My Sugar Pie, Patrick’s Kitchen and Drinks and Plum’s Upper Room. A Zzzestpresso Coffee Bar sponsored by Bentley Zionsville will also be featured and door prizes will be awarded. Tickets are available at Butler’s Pantry, Kern Brothers Shoes and Rail Trail Gardens. Proceeds benefit the Summer Speech and Hearing Clinic, Riley Cochlear Implant Research and the Zionsville arts community.

Race to benefit autism group
“Race for the Piece,” the first annual 5k run/walk to benefit Austism Speaks, will be Saturday, April 26, at Starkey Park. Autism Speaks is an organization that helps build autism awareness and provide funding for autism research. Race entry fee is $15. Penny Putters slate luncheon
The Zionsville Penny Putters ladies golf league opening season luncheon will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 30, at Old Dominion Clubhouse, 201 Dominion Dr. The nine-hole league will play on Wednesdays from May 7 through Sept. 24, at the Zionsville Golf Course.

Nominations due for Zionsville Soaring Eagle Hall of Fame
Nominations for the Zionsville Soaring Eagle Hall of Fame are due May 1. Those eligible for nomination include any Zionsville Community High School graduate 10 years from the time of graduation or Zionsville Community Schools faculty, administration and staff immediately upon their retirement. The criteria for nomination and selection are based on post-high school achievement for student nominees and school contribution for ZCS employees. Nominees will be judged on their public/community service; business/career achievement; academic, school administration, athletic-related achievement; military, government, municipal service; cultural/arts achievement; charitable philanthropy; and contributions to Zionsville schools/students. A maximum of five inductees will be selected each year by a seven-member committee.
The nomination forms should include name of nominee, year graduated, current mailing address, phone, fax number and e-mail, and a brief paragraph explaining the reason for nomination. The induction ceremony will be at the ZCHS LGI room at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 26.
Family History 101
Are you interested in learning more about your family history but unsure about how to begin? Join Mary Kraeszig, SullivanMunce Cultural Center library director and genealogist, from 10:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 3, at the center, 205-225 W. Hawthorne St. Kraeszig will give an overview of the sources to use to document family history, including birth, marriage, death, census, land, cemetery and church records, wills and obituaries. Genealogy software options and online databases will also be discussed.

Relay for Life gears up
Relay for Life of Zionsville is June 20 to June 21 in Lions Park. This 24-hour event honors cancer survivors and caregivers, raises funds for research and patient services and educates the public about cancer and its prevention.

Zionsville grads to reunite
The second Zionsville High School All Class Reunion is set for 7 p.m. to midnight Saturday, July 26, at the Palomino Ballroom, 481 S. County Road 1200 East near Zionsville.
All former students (ages 21 and older) as well as current and former teachers, coaches, administrators and staff are invited to attend and may bring one guest or spouse. Admission is free to all paid Zionsville Alumni Association members as well as retired teachers, coaches, administrators and staff. The cost is $15 for non-members. ZAA membership is available to everyone through various categories and starts at just $10 per year. Visit www.zionsvillealumni.org for membership information.

County offers vaccines
The Boone County Health Department offers affordable vaccines to all Boone County children, with services available in both Lebanon and Zionsville. Bring a current shot record to each appointment. Evening appointments are available.
The cost is $6 per visit for school required vaccines. Prices vary for adult vaccines.
Immunizations contain vaccines that protect your child and our communities from diseases such as measles and whooping cough. Children should receive their primary series of vaccines by age 2. Booster doses are then given between ages 4 and 6. The booster vaccines are often referred to as “kindergarten shots.”

Club invites members to join Fitness Walks
The Newcomers and Friends Club of Zionsville (formerly known as the Welcome Wagon Club of Zionsville) is opening its Fitness Walking Groups to new members. The group makes exercise fun by walking and talking on the Zionsville Rail Trail with two weekly fitness walks; one meets on Tuesdays at 9 a.m. and the other on Thursdays at 8:30 a.m. Participants walk for an hour, and meet for coffee afterward on Tuesdays. All walkers are welcome.
