Penny Putters slate luncheon
The Zionsville Penny Putters ladies golf league opening season luncheon will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 30, at Old Dominion Clubhouse, 201 Dominion Dr. The nine-hole league will play on Wednesdays from May 7 through Sept. 24, at the Zionsville Golf Course.
Dues for the season are $35 plus the cost of the first 10 games, for a total of $125 due at the luncheon. Carts are also available. Players of all levels are welcome to join. Call Ruth at 733-8774 or Rose at 873-9655 for more information.

Woman’s Club to meet
The Zionsville Woman’s Club will meet at 1 p.m. Friday, May 2, at the home of Pam Fiscus. Suzy Herring will give the program.

The Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library, 250 N. Fifth St., has several upcoming events. Registration is required for each children’s class and some adult programs. Call 873-3149 to register.
• Summer celebration spring cupcakes — 1 p.m. Friday, May 2. Ages 3 to 6. Celebrate the coming of summer by creating spring cupcakes. Presenting is Sabrina Gossett of HIP Studios. Registration required.
• Mother’s Day Surprise — 10 a.m. or 1 p.m. Friday, May 9. Ages 4 to 6. No moms allowed. Top secret. Join Miss Dawn and Miss Jamie for a fun-filled event celebrating moms and making a special gift just for her. Registration required.
• Dick Wolfsie, humorist and TV personality -- 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 21, at the Friends of the Library annual meeting, Lora Hussey room. Free and open to the public.

Zion Nature Center
offers activities
The Zion Nature Center, 690 Beech St., will have several classes and events this month. Call the nature center at 873-8950 or visit www.zionnaturecenter.org for more information or to register for classes.
• Nature Hike — 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday May 3 and May 4. Take an exciting hike in nearby Zion Nature Sanctuary and enjoy the sights and sound of spring. Come discover the beautiful wildflowers, birds, insects, mammals, trees and other wild things happening. Free.
• Orchids — 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 7. Adult program. Michael Hinshaw will present a program on orchids. Hinshaw is a member of the Central Indiana Orchid Society and has more than 25 years of experience growing orchids. The presentation will address the selection, care and prevention of disease in the more common, readily available orchid varieties. Attendees will also see how to repot phalaenopsis orchids. One lucky person will draw the winning ticket to take one of the beautiful orchids home.
• Puppet Show: “Clean and Green” — 1 p.m. Saturday, May 10. Ages 3 and older. Miss Diane and her Puppet Pals will present a magical show about recycling in Playland.
• Decorate a Flower Pot — 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday May 10 and May11. Ages 4 and older. Custom decorate a flowerpot and plant some flower seeds for a great Mother’s Day gift. We will have all the materials. $2 craft fee.
• Frogs and Toads — 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday May 17 and May 18. Ages 6 and older. It’s that time of year again, and the frogs are calling. Come to this presentation about Indiana’s frogs and toads and learn all about local frogs and their specific calls. See several live species. Free.
• Bluebirds — 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 21. Adults. Art Jeffries will show slides on bluebirds and how to attract them to your property. Jeffries is a member of the North American Bluebird Society Speakers Bureau and the Indiana Bluebird Society. Kathy and Dave Williams of Wild Birds Unlimited will also be on hand to answer questions. Free.
• “Everything’s Ducky” — 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday May 24 and May 25. Ages 5 and older. Learn about ducks around Indiana. There will be a live duck at the center, allowing participants to come into close contact with these web-footed creatures. Free. Duck crafts available.
• Hummingbirds — 2 p.m. Saturday May 31. Ages 5 and older. Learn fun facts about hummingbirds and how to attract them to your yard. Free. Optional hummingbird crafts will be available.
• IT’S EASY TO BE GREEN! Exhibit — The newest interactive exhibit will show participants new ways to be earth friendly. Discover the makings of an “organic garbage disposal,” play Eco-Wheel, and learn about a “carbon footprint.” Green crafts and games make this exhibit fun for the whole family. The exhibit will be on display through August.

ZCHS PTO meets
The year-end Zionsville High School PTO meeting, followed by brunch, will take place at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 14, at the home of Jane Fuqua, 9708 Autumn Way. The PTO will vote on next year’s board and do summer planning. All interested parents are welcome to attend. Call 769-7874 for more information.

R.O.C.K. registration begins
Really Outrageous Christian Kids, a before-and-after school program at Zionsville United Methodist Church for children in grades K-6 will have registration for the 2008-09 school year beginning Thursday, May 1, for current participants. Registration for new participants will begin Friday, May 16, and continue until all spots are filled. Fly or drive for pancakes
A pancake breakfast “fly- or drive-in” will be from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, May 3, at the Indianapolis Executive Airport, 11329 E. State Road 32. The airport and Montgomery Aviation are hosting the event, which will feature aircraft displays, remote-controlled planes, face painting, a silent auction, door prizes and equipment displays from the Westfield and Zionsville Fire departments. Private airplane rides will be offered for $10 per person. Breakfast will be served by the Commemorative Air Force.

Family History 101
Are you interested in learning more about your family history but unsure about how to begin? Join Mary Kraeszig, SullivanMunce Cultural Center library director and genealogist, from 10:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 3, at the center, 205-225 W. Hawthorne St. Kraeszig will give an overview of the sources to use to document family history, including birth, marriage, death, census, land, cemetery and church records, wills and obituaries. Genealogy software options and online databases will also be discussed.

Grant applications due May 5
Application deadlines for the Zeta Sigma Chapter of Tri Kappa grants is Monday, May 5. Boone County organizations will be considered for the grants if they propose programs of a charitable, cultural or educational nature. Bluebirds celebrate 20 years
The Boone County Bluebird Society spring meeting will be 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, at the Boone REMC Community Room, 1207 Indianapolis Ave., Lebanon, and will mark the 20th anniversary of the club. Speakers will discuss attracting bluebirds to the garden, monitoring nesting boxes and dealing with challenges. The public, as well as all past and present members, is welcome. Gardeners visit orchids
At 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 6 ,the Village Garden Club will tour the Hoosier Orchid Company, 8440 W. 82nd St., Indianapolis. Those wishing to carpool may meet at 9:30 a.m. behind the Zionsville Town Hall, 1100 W. Oak St. Newcomers and friends are welcome.

Nominations due for Zionsville Soaring Eagle Hall of Fame
Nominations for the Zionsville Soaring Eagle Hall of Fame are due May 10. Those eligible for nomination include any Zionsville Community High School graduate 10 years from the time of graduation or Zionsville Community Schools faculty, administration and staff immediately upon their retirement. The criteria for nomination and selection are based on post-high school achievement for student nominees and school contribution for ZCS employees. Nominees will be judged on their public/community service; business/career achievement; academic, school administration, athletic-related achievement; military, government, municipal service; cultural/arts achievement; charitable philanthropy; and contributions to Zionsville schools/students. A maximum of five inductees will be selected every three years by a seven-member committee to coincide with the all-class reunion.
The nomination forms should include name of nominee, year graduated, current mailing address, phone, fax number and e-mail, and a brief paragraph explaining the reason for nomination. The induction ceremony will be at the ZCHS LGI room at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 26.

Library seeks teen summer volunteers
The Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library is looking for teens in grades 6 to12 who are friendly and polite, careful and conscientious to volunteer during the 10-week summer reading program. Teens will hand out summer reading prizes, set up and help during programs, and put away DVDs and videos. Those assigned as summer desk assistants will be responsible for enthusiastically promoting and explaining the summer reading program to both children and teens.
All those interested should fill out and turn in a summer volunteer application form by Monday, May 12, and attend a one-hour orientation session. Applications are available at the Teen and Adult Services desk and on www.zionsville.lib.in.us.

Colorguard hosts flag clinic
Students in kindergarten to eighth grade are invited to attend Flag Fest from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 17, at Zionsville Community High School, 1000 Mulberry St. Attendees will learn a flag routine they will perform for the public at the end of the event. The ZCHS Winterguard, jazz band and other band ensembles will also perform. A $25 registration fee covers instruction, a performance flag, T-shirt and snack. Relay for Life gears up
Relay for Life of Zionsville is June 20 to June 21 in Lions Park. This 24-hour event honors cancer survivors and caregivers, raises funds for research and patient services and educates the public about cancer and its prevention.
Organizers seek survivors and caregivers for a special ceremony honoring them. Volunteer opportunities in other areas are available as well. Contact Julie Haines at 873-1055 or julieh53@sbcglobal.net for more information.

Zionsville grads to reunite
The second Zionsville High School All Class Reunion is set for 7 p.m. to midnight Saturday, July 26, at the Palomino Ballroom, 481 S. County Road 1200 East near Zionsville.
All former students (ages 21 and older) as well as current and former teachers, coaches, administrators and staff are invited to attend and may bring one guest or spouse. Admission is free to all paid Zionsville Alumni Association members as well as retired teachers, coaches, administrators and staff. The cost is $15 for non-members. ZAA membership is available to everyone through various categories and starts at just $10 per year. Visit www.zionsvillealumni.org for membership information.

Club invites members to join Fitness Walks
The Newcomers and Friends Club of Zionsville (formerly known as the Welcome Wagon Club of Zionsville) is opening its Fitness Walking Groups to new members. The group makes exercise fun by walking and talking on the Zionsville Rail Trail with two weekly fitness walks; one meets on Tuesdays at 9 a.m. and the other on Thursdays at 8:30 a.m. Participants walk for an hour, and meet for coffee afterward on Tuesdays. All walkers are welcome.
