Zion Nature Center
offers activities
The Zion Nature Center, 690 Beech St., will have several classes and events this month. Regular hours are Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Each Wednesday is Wild Wednesday and hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is free.

• Wild Wednesdays — 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30. All ages. Come for games, hikes, animal talks, crafts and more. Programs start at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. each day. Dress for a mess.
• Salamanders — 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, July 12 and 13. All ages. Come learn about Indiana’s native salamanders and see some live ones up close. Free.
• Honey Bees — 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 15, ages 7 and up. Beekeeper Doug Miller will tell you about the wonderful things bees do that help us. You will be able to see an observational bee hive and learn the true meaning of “busy as a bee.”
• Animal Adventures: Flying Insects — 1 p.m. Thursday, July 17. Ages 3 to 6. The librarians from the Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library and the naturalists from the Zion Nature Center join together to share stories and facts about flying insects. Meet at the library at 1 p.m. for story time then walk to the Zion Nature Center. Free. Registration is required.
• Grow Your Own Butterfly — 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, July 19 and 20. All ages. Learn fun facts about butterflies and create butterfly crafts. Take home a caterpillar habitat with food and watch it turn into a beautiful butterfly. Program is free but there is a $2 fee to take home caterpillar habitat. Registration required.
Farmers’ market
The Zionsville Farmers’ Market will be from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, July 5, at the corner of Hawthorne and Main streets. This week’s special event is the Zucchini Race.
Library announces programs
The Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library, 250 N. Fifth St., has a number of upcoming events. Registration is required for each children’s class and some adult programs. Call 873-3149 to register.
• Traders Point Creamery Tour — 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday, July 7. Adult program. Meet at the creamery for a free tour of the organic dairy farm.
• Incredible Edible Insects — 1 p.m.. Monday, July 7, for ages 5 to 12. Come cook up a storm with Miss Julie. Create crunchy caterpillars with Rice Krispies and marshmallow fluff, and learn some intriguing insect facts. Registration required.
• Digging the Past — 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday July 8. Adult program. Bring backyard discoveries to State Archaeologist Dr. Rick Jones. He will also showcase an assortment of rocks, fossils, arrowheads, and geodes for display and discussion.
• Buggie Boogie Storytime — 9:45 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, July 8 to July 24. Ages 12 to 35 months. Enjoy storytime, songs, fingerplays and more. Registration required.
• Gamer Triathlon — 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, in the Mayfield Room. Teen program. Compete to be the best in three events: Guitar Hero II, Smash Bros. Brawl and DDR. High scorerers will take home prizes.
• Lean and Green Workshop — 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, in the Lora Hussey Room. Adult program. The second session of five sessions in which home improvement strategies to save energy and money are discussed.
• Mysteriously Miniaturized Shrinky Dinks — 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, July 10, in the Hoffman Room. Teen program. Draw or trace designs onto Shrinky Dink plastic.
• Movie Afternoons — 3 p.m. Thursdsay July 10 and Tuesday, July 22. Ages 3 to 12. Beat the heat with light-hearted movies. Registration required.
• Pumpkin master class — noon Saturday, July 12. Come for pumpkin gardening tips like how to battle weeds, drought and insects. Registration required.
• The Good, Bad and Bugly — 1 p.m. Monday, July 14. Ages 4 to 8. Creep into the library and the Orkin Man will help discover a bug’s place in the environment. Registration required.
• Magic and Mystery of Marcus Lehmann — 3 p.m. or 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 15. Ages 3 and up. Watch Magician Marcus Lehmann perform his amazing illusions. Registration required.
• Wiggly Worms — 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 16, for ages 3 to 6, and 11 a.m. for ages 5 to 6. Explore the underground world of the worm. Registration required.
• Butterfly symmetry — 1 p.m. Wednesdsay, July 16. Ages 7 to 12. Create a unique butterfly craft using the concept of symmetry. Registration required.
Lions Park offers free summer concerts
“Musical Magic,” a free Sunday evening concert series in Lions Park, will take place during the month of July.
On July 6, the Zionsville Concert Band, under the baton of John Richardson, and Ken Knowles, soloist-tenor, will perform “Patriotic Gems - American Classics.” On July 13, it’s “Great Jazz Standards” with the Barton Rogers Jazz Band, conducted by Jane Pio. On July 20, there’s “A Tribute to Cole Porter and other Hoosier Composers,” with the Indiana Wind Symphony, Charlie Conrad conducting and Ken Knowles, soloist-tenor. Finally, on July 27, patrons will hear “Give my Regards to Broadway,” by the Indianapolis Symphonic Band, Joe Pio, conductor.
All concerts begin at 7 p.m. at the gazebo. Bring seating; rain location is the Lions Clubhouse on Elm Street.
Zionsville Alumni seek sponsors and classic cars
The Zionsville Alumni Association needs additional alumni and business sponsors for its All Class Reunion Saturday, July 26, at the Palomino Ballroom. Sponsorships are $100 and up, and sponsors will be listed in the program booklet. Donations of any amount are welcome. The group is seeking enough antique and classic cars to encircle the Palomino building the night of the event. Admission to the reunion is free to all paid ZAA members and $15 to non-members. Those age 21 and up may attend.

Library collects
for storm victims
The Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library will collect items for Indiana flood and tornado victims in a number of counties, including Boone, until July 31. All items will be donated to Gleaner’s Food Bank of Indiana for distribution. The library will cancel up to $2 in notice and unhold fees for each item and individual donates. Items must be unopened and no glass will be accepted.
Food items most in need are: cereal bars, juice, pop-top fruit/veggies/pasta foods; power bars, power drinks and water. Non-food items in need include: bleach, buckets, cleaners such as Lysol or Scrubbing Bubbles, diapers, baby bottles, baby formula, trash bags, hand sanitizer, mops, masks, paper towels, toilet paper, rubber gloves and sponges.
KinderClub
registration is open
KinderClub, a program of the Boys & Girls Club of Zionsville, is taking registrations for the 2008-09 school year. The program opens at 9 a.m. for children going to afternoon kindergarten, and children must bring a sack lunch. Participants must have a current club membership to join KinderClub, which is $45 per child. The cost of KinderClub is $85 for all five school days or $20 per day, with a three-day minimum. After-school care is included in the price of membership. Bus service is provided to and from all four Zionsville elementary schools. Call 873-6670 for more information.
Lions call for Fall Festival vendors
The 55th Annual Zionsville Lions Club Fall Festival, Sept. 5, 6 and 7, will feature a parade, carnival, food court, entertainment, arts and crafts, kids’ corner, pet pavilion and more. The club is seeking vendors to participate. Those interested may find all details and application forms at www.zionsvillelions.com or by calling 873-5540. Application deadline is Aug. 1.
Tee It Up
The Boys & Girls Club of Zionsville will have the gold outing fundraiser Tee It Up For The Kids Aug. 5, at the Golf Club of Indiana. The cost to play is $500 for a foursome or $150 for individual golfers. Sponsorships are available. Call the club at 873-6670 for more information.

The ZCHS Marching Band ordered new band uniforms for the 2008-09 school year, but it’s not too late to purchase one of the old uniforms. Prices are $25/jacket and $5/hat. All proceeds go toward Z’BOP. Call Charlene at 663-7792 or Sarah at 873-1324 for more information.
