Zion Nature Center

offers activities

The Zion Nature Center, 690 Beech St., will have several classes and events this month. Regular hours are Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Each Wednesday is Wild Wednesday and hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is free.

Call the center at 873-8950 or visit www.zionnaturecenter.org for more information or to register for classes.

• Wild Wednesdays — 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 9, 16, 23 and 30. All ages. Come for games, hikes, animal talks, crafts and more. Programs start at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. each day. Dress for a mess.

• Salamanders — 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, July 12 and 13. All ages. Come learn about Indiana’s native salamanders and see some live ones up close. Free.

• Honey Bees — 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 15, ages 7 and up. Beekeeper Doug Miller will tell you about the wonderful things bees do that help. See an observational bee hive and learn the true meaning of “busy as a bee.”

• Animal Adventures: Flying Insects — 1 p.m. Thursday, July 17. Ages 3 to 6. The librarians from the Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library and the naturalists from the Zion Nature Center join together to share stories and facts about flying insects. Meet at the library at 1 p.m. for storytime then walk to the Zion Nature Center. Free. Registration is required.

• Grow Your Own Butterfly — 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, July 19 and 20. All ages. Learn fun facts about butterflies and create butterfly crafts. Take home a caterpillar habitat with food and watch it turn into a beautiful butterfly. Program is free but there is a $2 fee to take home a caterpillar habitat. Registration required.

• Wild Wednesday with Wendell — 1 p.m., Wednesday, July 23. All ages. Wendell Zetterberg Jr., chapter coordinator of the Central Indiana Frog Watchers, will bring some of his amazing amphibians to see up close. Learn about amphibians in the community and from around the world. Free.

• Ladybugs — 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, July 26 and 27. All ages. Come learn fun facts about ladybugs and create crafts to take home. See the live ladybug habitat. Free.

• Animal Adventures: Forest and Fairies —11 a.m. Tuesday, July 29. Ages 3 to 6. The librarians from the Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library and the naturalists from the Zion Nature Center join together to share stories and facts about woodland animals. Meet at the library at 11 a.m. for storytime and then walk to the Nature Center to learn interesting facts and visit the forest to build a fairyhouse from woodland materials. Free. Registration required.



Library announces programs

The Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library, 250 N. Fifth St., has a number of upcoming events. Registration is required for each children’s class and some adult programs. Call 873-3149 to register.

• Gamer Triathlon — 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, in the Mayfield Room. Teen program. Compete to be the best in three events: Guitar Hero II, Smash Bros. Brawl and DDR. High scorers will take home prizes.

• Lean and Green Workshop II — 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, in the Lora Hussey Room. Adult program. The second session of five sessions in which home improvement strategies to save energy and money are discussed.

• Mysteriously Miniaturized Shrinky Dinks — 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, July 10, in the Hoffman Room. Teen program. Draw or trace designs onto Shrinky Dink plastic.

• Movie Afternoons — 3 p.m. Thursday, July 10 and Tuesday, July 22. Ages 3 to 12. Beat the heat with light-hearted movies. Registration required.

• Before CSI, Before Forensic Files, There was Sherlock Holmes — 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, July 10, Lora Hussey Room. In the late 1800s, forensic science was just beginning. DNA had not been discovered; fingerprint identification was just becoming accepted and chemists used beakers, test tubes and Bunsen burners rather than today’s sophisticated instruments. Sherlock Holmes often used or referred to scientific methods and tests in his investigations and the Holmes stories were the first detective fiction to delve deeply into forensic science.

• Pumpkin master class — noon Saturday, July 12. Come for pumpkin gardening tips like how to battle weeds, drought and insects. Registration required.

• Craft: Flower Pounding — 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Monday, July 14, Olive Hoffman Room. Bring your hammers and cutting boards for a “flower pounding” workshop. Create fabulous prints. Flowers, muslin, ribbons, stationery, fabric pens (and cotton for your ears!) will be provided.

• The Good, Bad and Bugly — 1 p.m. Monday, July 14. Ages 4 to 8. Creep into the library and the Orkin Man will help discover a bug’s place in the environment. Registration required.

• Live Monarch Butterflies! — 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 15. Meet live Monarchs and their handlers, naturalists Ann Richardson, Robert Richardson and Valerie Zetusky. See Monarch development in all its stages; learn how to attract Monarchs to a garden by cultivating milkweed and other native Indiana plants.

• Out of this World Smoothies — 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 15, Hoffman Room. Make and taste-test delicious Smoothie recipes. The perfect treat for a hot day.

• Magic and Mystery of Marcus Lehmann — 3 p.m. or 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 15. Ages 3 and up. Watch Magician Marcus Lehmann perform his amazing illusions. Registration required.

• Wiggly Worms — 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 16, for ages 3 to 6, and 11 a.m. for ages 5 to 6. Explore the underground world of the worm. Registration required.

• Butterfly Symmetry — 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 16. Ages 7 to 12. Create a unique butterfly craft using the concept of symmetry. Registration required.

• Book Discussion: Henry Beston’s “The Outermost House” — 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, July 17. Meet at the Exploratoreum table for a lively discussion of one of America’s best “solitary-sojourn” nature writers, Henry Beston. Register for the discussion and receive a free copy of the book and a booklist for further reading. The book is a masterpiece about a time (the 1920s), a place (Cape Cod) and a man (Beston) who lived for a year on a dune above the sea. Discussion held outside, weather permitting. • Insectology Demo and Q & A — 1 p.m. Friday, July 18. Ages 5 to 9. Megan Hyslop, insectary manager from Dow AgroSciences, will bring live bugs, perform a live bug demonstration, and answer your questions about her creepy-crawlies. Registration required.

• Butterfly Bash — 1 p.m. Monday, July 21. Ages 3 to 6. Celebrate a butterfly habitat in the library. Registration required.

• Thoreau, Darwin and the Politics of Nature — 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday, July 21, Lora Hussey Room. Tom Potter, president of the Thoreau Society, will present a comparative nature lecture on Thoreau and Darwin. Discover the latest buzz on two great thinkers in the world of science.

• Hoosiers in the Olympics — 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday, July 28, Lora Hussey Room. Indianapolis journalist Nelson Price presents a fascinating story of Hoosiers in the Olympics with an array of supporting visuals.

• Craft: Crochet a “Night Sky” bracelet — 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 29, Lora Hussey Room. A dramatic, interestingly textured black-and-white yarn gives this distinctive bangle evening allure. The pattern is made up of simple single-crochet stitches, which all participants must already know how to do. All supplies provided. Time 2 Bead instructor Bonnie Carter teaches the class.

• Bug Olympics — 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 30 for ages 5 to 8. Learn from the insect world that Olympic records can be broken. Registration required.

• Tour an Organic Vegetable Garden — 10 a.m. to noon Thursday, July 31. Join host/owner Maria Smietana to tour Valentine Hill Farm, a Zionsville working organic vegetable farm. After the free tour, sit on the porch overlooking the fields and woods, sip cool, homemade lemonade and ask questions. Meet at the farm. • Happy Birthday, Harry Potter — 1 p.m. for ages 7 to 9; 3 p.m. for ages 10 to 12, Thursday, July 31. Celebrate Harry’s birthday with an ultimate Trivia Quest contest. Registration required.



Lions Park

offers free summer concerts

“Musical Magic,” a free Sunday evening concert series in Lions Park, will take place during the month of July. On July 13, it’s “Great Jazz Standards” with the Barton Rogers Jazz Band, conducted by Jane Pio. On July 20, there’s “A Tribute to Cole Porter and other Hoosier Composers,” with the Indiana Wind Symphony, Charlie Conrad conducting and Ken Knowles, soloist-tenor. Finally, on July 27, patrons will hear “Give my Regards to Broadway,” by the Indianapolis Symphonic Band, Jane Pio, conductor.

All concerts begin at 7 p.m. at the gazebo. Bring your own seating; rain location is the Lions Clubhouse on Elm Street.



Shepherds

to meet July 15

The Zionsville Shepherds will meet on Tuesday, July 15, in the Fellowship Hall of the Zionsville Christian Church, 120 N. Ninth St. Registration takes place at 11:30 a.m.; lunch is at noon, followed by a film (to be determined).

Z’Friends to meet

Club announces events

The Boys and Girls Club West, 5964 S. County Road 700 East, Whitestown, will host a basketball shooting camp for children in grades fifth through eighth, with instructor LaSalle Thompson, Monday, July 21 through Wednesday, July 23. Lions call for Fall Festival vendors

The 55th Annual Zionsville Lions Club Fall Festival, Sept. 5, 6 and 7, will feature a parade, carnival, food court, entertainment, arts and crafts, kids’ corner, pet pavilion and more.
