Zion Nature Center

offers activities

The Zion Nature Center, 690 Beech St., will have several classes and events this month. Regular hours are Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Each Wednesday is Wild Wednesday and hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is free.

• Animal Adventures: Flying Insects — 1 p.m. Thursday, July 17. Ages 3 to 6. The librarians from the Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library and the naturalists from the Zion Nature Center join together to share stories and facts about flying insects. Meet at the library at 1 p.m. for storytime then walk to the Zion Nature Center. Free. Registration is required.

• Grow Your Own Butterfly — 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, July 19 and 20. All ages. Learn fun facts about butterflies and create butterfly crafts. Take home a caterpillar habitat with food and watch it turn into a beautiful butterfly. Program is free but there is a $2 fee to take home caterpillar habitat. Registration required.

• Wild Wednesday with Wendell — 1 p.m., Wednesday, July 23. All ages. Wendell Zetterberg Jr., chapter coordinator of the Central Indiana Frog Watchers, will bring some of his amazing amphibians to see up close. Learn about amphibians in the community and from around the world. Free.



Library announces programs

The Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library, 250 N. Fifth St., has a number of upcoming events. Registration is required for each children’s class and some adult programs. Call 873-3149 to register.

• Wiggly Worms — 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 16, for ages 3 to 6, and 11 a.m. for ages 5 to 6. Explore the underground world of the worm. Registration required.

• Butterfly Symmetry — 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 16. Ages 7 to 12. Create a unique butterfly craft using the concept of symmetry. Registration required.

• Book Discussion: Henry Beston’s “The Outermost House” — 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, July 17. Meet at the Exploratoreum table for a lively discussion of one of America’s best “solitary-sojourn” nature writers, Henry Beston. Register for the discussion and receive a free copy of the book and a booklist for further reading. The book is a masterpiece about a time (the 1920s), a place (Cape Cod) and a man (Beston) who lived for a year on a dune above the sea. Discussion held outside, weather permitting. If rain, Mayfield Room.

• Insectology Demo and Q & A — 1 p.m. Friday, July 18. Ages 5 to 9. Megan Hyslop, insectary manager from Dow AgroSciences, will bring live bugs, perform a live bug demonstration, and answer your questions about her creepy-crawlies. Registration required.

• Butterfly Bash — 1 p.m. Monday, July 21. Ages 3 to 6. Celebrate a butterfly habitat in the library. Registration required.

• Thoreau, Darwin and the Politics of Nature — 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday, July 21, Lora Hussey Room. Tom Potter, president of the Thoreau Society, will present a comparative nature lecture on Thoreau and Darwin. Discover the latest buzz on two great thinkers in the world of science.

• Lovely Ladybugs — 10 a.m. for ages 3 to 4, 11 a.m. for ages 5 to 6, Wednesday, July 23. Stories, songs and crafts about ladybugs. Registration required.

• Rock Hunters — 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 23. Ages 7 to 12. Come examine different types of rocks, minerals and crystals. Registration required.

• Nature Writing: Discovering Personal Response to the Great Outdoors — 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 23, Lora Hussey Room. Discover new ways to appreciate nature. Writer/journalist Elsa Kramer, Writers’ Center of Indiana, will teach participants how to create an intimate response to nature through the essay and journaling.



Z’Friends to meet

The Z’Friends social group will meet for lunch at Squealers, 86th Street and Zionsville Road, at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, July 17. Newcomers are welcome. Call Dorothy at 873-6358 to R.S.V.P.



Opening night

for quilt exhibit

An opening night reception for “Basically New,” an exhibit of contemporary and traditional quilts by the Charm Club, will be at the SullivanMunce Cultural Center from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, July 18. The exhibit will run from July 19 through Oct. 18. Call the center at 873-4900, for more information.



“Plein Air”

workshop slated

A “plein air,” or open air, workshop will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 19, at the SullivanMunce art center and selected outdoor locations. The workshop, taught by Brian Rego, will begin with painting demonstrations from 8 a.m. to noon, followed by a bring-your-own lunch from noon to 1 p.m., and one-on-one painting instruction from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The cost is $125. Rego is an accomplished plein air painter and lives in South Carolina. Plein air artist Christopher Stuart describes him as “an incredibly skilled painter who understands color, editing and edges at a very advanced level.”

Relay For Life

fundraiser set for July 22

A community night fund-raiser to benefit Zionsville Relay For Life and the American Cancer Society will be Tuesday, July 22, at Monical’s Pizza of Traders Point. Twenty percent of all pre-tax restaurant purchases that day will be donated to the American Cancer Society when presenting the promotional flyer. Contact Terry Gocking at 340-6805 for more information or to obtain a copy of the 20 percent donation flyer. Monical’s is located at 6010 W. 86th St., in front of the Traders Point movie theater.



Tri Kappa sponsors concert in the park

A Celtic concert will take place at 7:30 p.m., Friday, July 30 in Lincoln Park as part of the Lincoln Park Concert summer series. The concert is being sponsored by donations from the Associate Chapter of Tri Kappa and Mightee Ducks. All members of the Active and Associate Chapters of Tri Kappa are invited to attend the event.



Tee It Up

The Boys & Girls Club of Zionsville will have its 25th annual “Tee It Up for Kids” golf outing fundraiser, beginning at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5, at the Golf Club of Indiana, 6905 South 525 East., Lebanon (Rt. 334 west of the interstate). The cost of play is $500 for a foursome or $150 for individual golfers. Sponsorships are available. Call the club at 873-6670 for more information.
