Library announces programs

The Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library, 250 N. Fifth St., has a number of upcoming events. Registration is required for each children’s class and some adult programs. Call 873-3149 to register.

• Lovely Ladybugs — 10 a.m. for ages 3 to 4, 11 a.m. for ages 5 to 6, Wednesday, July 23. Stories, songs and crafts about ladybugs. Registration required.

• Rock Hunters — 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 23. Ages 7 to 12. Come examine different types of rocks, minerals and crystals. Registration required.

• Nature Writing: Discovering Personal Response to the Great Outdoors — 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 23, Lora Hussey Room. Discover new ways to appreciate nature. Writer/journalist Elsa Kramer, Writers’ Center of Indiana, will teach participants how to create an intimate response to nature through the essay and journaling.

• Think Green: Aluminum Accessories — 2 p.m. Thursday, July 24, Hoffman Room. Recycle aluminum soda can tabs into funky, chunky necklaces, bracelets and more.

• Grasshopper Anatomy — 2 p.m. Thursday, July 24, for ages 10 to 12. Each child will get a grasshopper to dissect. Parent participation and registration required.

• Weather: Fun Facts and Myths — 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 24, Lora Hussey Room. Join WISH-TV Chief Meteorologist/SCI-Tech Editor Steve Bray as he presents an entertaining weather program. Test your weather IQ; win prizes.

• Crafty Critters: Litter Bug — 1 p.m. Monday, July 28. Ages 8 to 12. Use recyclables to create a crafty little litter bug. Registration required.

• Stitch’n at the Library — 4 p.m. Monday, July 28, for ages 8 to 12. Knitters and crocheters bring yarn and needles to the Library for some stitching fun. Registration required.

• Hoosiers in the Olympics — 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday, July 28, Lora Hussey Room. Indianapolis journalist Nelson Price presents a fascinating story of Hoosiers in the Olympics with an array of supporting visuals.

• Craft: Crochet a “Night Sky” bracelet — 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 29, Lora Hussey Room. A dramatic, interestingly textured black-and-white yarn gives this distinctive bangle evening allure. The pattern is made up of simple single-crochet stitches, which all participants must already know how to do. All supplies provided. Time 2 Bead instructor Bonnie Carter teaches the class.

• Bug Olympics — 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 30 for ages 5 to 8. Learn from the insect world that Olympic records can be broken. Registration required.

• Movie a la Mode — 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 30, Mayfield Room. Make an ice cream sundae and watch the movie “College Road Trip,” rated G.

• Lean and Green Workshop IV — 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 30, Lora Hussey Room. Session IV allows participants to share their home environment success stories. Additional tips and ideas for reducing our “carbon footprint” will also be shared.

• Tour an Organic Vegetable Garden — 10 a.m. to noon Thursday, July 31. Join host/owner Maria Smietana to tour Valentine Hill Farm, a Zionsville working organic vegetable farm. After the free tour, sit on the porch overlooking the fields and woods, sip cool, homemade lemonade and ask questions. Meet at the farm. Directions available at the Teen and Adult Reference Desk, second floor. Register required.

• “Happy Birthday, Harry Potter” — 1 p.m. for ages 7 to 9; 3 p.m. for ages 10 to 12, Thursday, July 31. Celebrate Harry’s birthday with an ultimate Trivia Quest contest. Registration required.

• Crafty Critters: Rock Bugs! — 1 p.m., Monday, Aug. 4, for ages 4 to 12. Paint a rock to look like a bug — real or imaginary. Registration is required.

• Paws to Read! — 4 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 5, for ages 6-10. Share a book with a furry four-legged friend from TheraPets of Indiana. Registration is required.



Farmers’ market

The Zionsville Farmers’ Market will be open from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, July 26, at the corner of Main and Hawthorne streets. The newly expanded market will feature live music with Robert Bruce Scott.



Zion Nature Center

offers activities

The Zion Nature Center, 690 Beech St., will have several classes and events this month. Regular hours are Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Each Wednesday is Wild Wednesday and hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is free.

• Ladybugs — 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, July 26 and 27. All ages. Come learn fun facts about ladybugs and create crafts to take home. See the live ladybug habitat. Free.

• Animal Adventures: Forest and Fairies —11 a.m. Tuesday, July 29. Ages 3 to 6. The librarians from the Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library and the naturalists from the Zion Nature Center join together to share with you stories and facts about woodland animals. Meet at the library at 11 a.m. for storytime and then walk to the Nature Center to learn interesting facts and visit the forest to build a fairyhouse from woodland materials. Free. Registration required.

• IT’S EASY TO BE GREEN! Exhibit — The newest interactive exhibit shows participants new ways to be earth friendly. Discover the makings of an “organic garbage disposal,” play Eco-Wheel, and learn about a “carbon footprint.” Green crafts and games make this exhibit fun for the whole family. The exhibit will be on display through August.



Shepherds to meet July 29

The Zionsville Shepherds will meet at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 29, in the Fellowship Hall of Zionsville Christian Church, 120 N. Ninth St. Registration will take place at 11:30 a.m.; blood pressures will be taken between 11:30 and noon, and lunch will be served at noon. Following lunch, the Rev. Larry Whinner, pastoral care advisor, Indiana Orthopedic Hospital, will speak.

All members of the community 55 and older are welcome to attend. Call Frances at 873-9128 for more information.



Tri Kappa sponsors concert in the park

A Celtic concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 30, in Lincoln Park as part of the Lincoln Park Concert summer series. The concert is being sponsored by donations from the Associate Chapter of Tri Kappa and Mightee Ducks. All members of the active and associate chapters of Tri Kappa are welcome.



Tee It Up

The Boys & Girls Club of Zionsville will have its 25th annual “Tee It Up for Kids” golf outing fundraiser, beginning at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5, at the Golf Club of Indiana, 6905 South 525 East., Lebanon (Rt. 334 west of the interstate). The cost of play is $500 for a foursome or $150 for individual golfers. Sponsorships are available. Call the club at 873-6670 for more information.



Quilt exhibit

“Basically New,” an exhibit of contemporary and traditional quilts by the Charm Club, is on exhibit from now through Oct. 18, at the SullivanMunce Cultural Center, 225 W. Hawthorne St. Call the center at 873-4900 for more information.



Sign-up for KinderClub time

The Boys & Girls Club of Zionsville is taking KinderClub registrations for the 2008-09 school year. Bus service is provided to and from all four Zionsville schools; club participants must bring a sack lunch. The club opens at 9 a.m. for children going to afternoon kindergarten. Children must have current membership to join KinderClub ($45/child). The cost of KinderClub is $85 for five days or $20/day with a three-day minimum. After-school care is provided in the price of membership. Call 873-6670 for more information.
