Sign-up for club

basketball

The Boys & Girls Club of Zionsville is signing up students in kindergarten through eighth-grade for basketball leagues. Those interested may sign up online at www.bagcoz.org or stop by the club at 1575 Mulberry St. The kindergarten league begins Oct. 18; the seventh- and eighth-grade boys evaluation is Dec. 2 with practice beginning the week of Jan. 22, 2009. Coach Montgomery’s program for girls in fifth-and sixth-grade begins Dec. 6; and practice for third- and fourth-grade begins the week of Jan. 5, 2009.

The fee for each league is $65 with a paid membership of $45 for each child. Call the club at 873-6670 for more information.



Eagle Ride to benefit leukemia group

The Eagle Ride will begin with registration and a continental breakfast from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, at American Legion Post No. 79, 9950 E. County Road 600 South. The event is sponsored by Village Station to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Bikes will leave the legion at 10:45 a.m. with the last bike in at 3:30 p.m. A hog roast, free with entry fee or $8 per person, will take place at 4 p.m. Also featured will be a bike show with prizes, including a first-place trophy; door prizes, raffles, 50/50 draws and an auction. “Mid-Life Crisis” will provide live entertainment from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., followed by Jenny and Jeff with karaoke from 8 p.m. to midnight.

Event-day registration is $25 per person, $35 for two, breakfast and T-shirt included. Pre-registration at the Village Station, 106th and Zionsville Road, is $20 per person, $30 for two.



Newcomers and Friends host kickoff luncheon

Grab the new neighbors, call old friends and come to the fall kick-off of the Zionsville Newcomers and Friends at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 8. Enjoy a light lunch and learn “what’s up” with the group’s monthly coffees, book club, bowling, Bunco, current events, ladies’ night out, couples wine and dine, day-trippers, movie club, play group, walking group, out-to-lunch bunch and more. Ellen Narva will host the luncheon meeting at her home. Call her at 733-2163 by Sept. 5 to R.S.V.P. The group is open to anyone living in Zionsville, whether newcomers or long-time residents. Membership fee is $20 per year.

Library announces

The Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library, 250 N. Fifth St., has a number of upcoming events. Registration is required for each children’s class and some adult programs. Call 873-3149 to register.

• Paws to Read! — 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2 for ages 6 to 10. Share a book with a furry four-legged friend. There will be a 15-minute time slot of one-on-one dog and kids bonding. Registration is required.

• Beautiful Birdhouses — 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, for ages 6 to 8. Listen to stories, catch flying feathers and make a beautiful birdhouse to comfort flying friends. Registration is required.

• Fun with Sabrina — 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, for ages 3 to 6. Come for fun and creative play with Miss Sabrina from HIP Studios. Registration is required.

• Fall I Storytime — The Fall I session of storytime runs Sept. 15 through Oct. 17 for ages birth through 6. A library card is required during the first week of registration and is then open to non-cardholders wishing to participate. Registration is required.

• Fall Fun — 10 a.m. or 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12 for ages 3 to 6 Create a fun fall craft at the library. Registration is required.



Zion Nature Center

offers activities

The Zion Nature Center, 690 Beech St., will have several classes and events this month. Call the nature center at 873-8950 or visit www.zionnaturecenter.org for more information or to register for classes.

• Stroller/Wheelchair Hikes — 11 a.m. Wednesdays, Sept. 10, 17 and 21. All ages. Come for a guided stroller/wheelchair hike through Creekside Nature Park. Enjoy exploring the wonders of nature along Eagle Creek. This scenic trail is a paved loop and is handicap accessible. Creekside Park is located in Zionsville just south of State Road 334 and Elm Street. Free.

• Beyond Culinary Herbs — 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18. Adults. A program on herbal plants native to the North American continent. Myrene Brown will discuss plants with uses beyond food for Native Americans and early American settlers. Learn about plants used as medicine, for flavoring, in ceremonies, for crafts and in dyeing. Free.

• Monarch Mania — 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 20 and 21. All ages. It is peak migration time for monarch butterflies throughout Indiana. Come learn some fun facts about these amazing insects and have hands-on fun creating butterfly crafts to take home. Free.

• Animal Adventures: Squirrels and Chipmunks — 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26, ages 3 to 6. The librarians from the Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library and the naturalists from the Zion Nature Center join together to share stories and facts about squirrels and chipmunks. Meet at the library at 1 p.m. for story time, then walk to Zion Nature Center. Free. Register at 873-3149, Ext. 11600, or at www.zionsville.lib.in.us.

• Chattering Chipmunks — 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 27 and 28. All ages. Chipmunks are very vocal and can be heard chattering as they gather food. Come uncover interesting facts about these “chatterboxes.” Free.



Farmers’ Market wants best apple pie

Interested bakers can pick up entry forms for the Zionsville Farmers’ Market “Best Apple Pie” contest Saturday, Sept. 13, during regular market hours, Saturdays, 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., at the corner of Hawthorne and Main streets.



Library needs

volunteers

The Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Library needs volunteers to help with shelving materials, assisting with special projects, making phone calls, and photocopying and delivering materials to the homebound through the “Books to Go” program. Area residents are invited to join the library’s dedicated Volunteer Corps. New adult volunteers can make a difference in the service the library offers the Zionsville community and will be instrumental to the continued success of the library.
