Zion Nature Center

offers activities

The Zion Nature Center, 690 Beech St., will have several classes and events this month. Call the nature center at 873-8950 or visit www.zionnaturecenter.org for more information or to register for classes.

• Beyond Culinary Herbs — 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18. Adults. A program on herbal plants native to the North American continent. Myrene Brown will discuss plants with uses beyond food for Native Americans and early American settlers. Learn about plants used as medicine, for flavoring, in ceremonies, for crafts and in dyeing. Free.

• Monarch Mania — 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 20 and 21. All ages. It is peak migration time for monarch butterflies throughout Indiana. Come learn some fun facts about these amazing insects and have hands-on fun creating butterfly crafts to take home. Free.

• Chattering Chipmunks — 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 27 and 28. All ages. Chipmunks are vocal and can be heard chattering as they gather food. Come uncover interesting facts about these “chatterboxes.” Free.



Library announces

programs

The Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library, 250 N. Fifth St., has a number of upcoming events. Registration is required for each children’s class and some adult programs. Call 873-3149 to register.

• Wii Play Games — 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays, Sept. 17, Oct. 8, Nov. 12 and Dec. 10. Come play games in the teen area of the library. We’ll have the Wii set up and board games out too. Game play is informal so feel free to hang out with friends and have fun. Grades six through 12.

• Dino Days — 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, ages 3 to 6. Have dino-mighty fun learning about dinosaurs. Registration is required.

• Library closed — Friday, Sept. 19, the library will be closed for staff training.

• Computer classes — The library will offer computer classes beginning Sept. 22 on PowerPoint, Word, the Internet, Excel, digital picture basics and more. Single three-hour sessions cost $25.50 and include a manual. Classes will be offered Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays through Dec. 3. A special 10-week series: Computer Savvy Seniors will be available for $95, including a manual. Class descriptions are available on the library Web site and at the Teen and Adult Reference desk. Class size is limited to 10.



Z’Friends to meet

Z’Friends will meet at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, at the Pancake House, 86th Street and Ditch Road, Indianapolis. Call Jane White at 873-1970 to attend; all are welcome. Z’Friends began Oct. 31, 2001, with a group of 17 friends meeting for lunch at Cobblestone Grill in Zionsville. There are no officers, committees or dues. The group has hosted breakfasts, brunches, lunches and afternoon teas.



Quilt and rug experts to speak

Jones Greenhouse, 645 N. County Road 650 East, Lebanon, will host the Quilt and Hooked Rug Show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20. Jan Hammond will speak on rug hooking at 10:30 a.m.; Connie Lancaster will speak on quilting at 12:30 p.m.; and Judy Pleiss will speak on altered and embellished fabrics at 2:30 p.m. Admission is $3 and kids get in free. Hit the Bricks

for Z’ville youth

The 26th annual “Hit the Bricks” 5-mile run/3-mile fun run/walk, sponsored by the Zionsville Optimist club, will take place Saturday, Sept. 20. Check in and race-day registration is 7 a.m. to 8 a.m.; race begins at 8:05 a.m. at Zionsville Community High School, 1000 Mulberry St.

The event benefits Zionsville youth and scholarship programs. T-shirts for race-day registrations are first-come, first-served while supplies last.

On day of event, the fee is $25 for the run, $20 for age 18 or under and $15 for the 3 mile fun run/walk, or $20 per family.

American Legion hosts benefit

American Legion Post No. 113, 1020 Hendricks Drive, Lebanon, will host a fundraiser to benefit Greg Carney of Lebanon Saturday Sept. 27. Carney was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor and money raised will go toward his medical bills. The event will begin at 9:30 a.m. with registration for a poker run to leave at 10:30 a.m. There will be an $8 pulled pork dinner at 5 p.m.; auction at 7 p.m.; and comedian Rob Booham from the Bob and Tom Show will perform at 9 p.m. Call Mary Trott at (765) 894-2387 or Jama Delaney at (765) 482-7681 for more information.



Art, music and

theater “fax grants” available

The Community Foundation of Boone County is offering funds for creative ideas in the areas of art, music and theater. Grants of up to $300 are available to local not-for-profit organizations and public school teachers to enhance the arts in the community. The grants are for items and equipment for long-term use, such as microphones, sheet music, costumes, permanent backdrops, electronic equipment and more. The initiative is designed to enhance the availability of the performing and visual arts in Boone County through music, theater, dance and the visual arts. All not-for-profit organizations or public school teachers in Lebanon, Sheridan, Western Boone and Zionsville are eligible to apply. Grants will be limited to one per not-for-profit and two per school.

Proposals are accepted by fax only at 873-0219 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Oct. 3. Nominations

for philanthropy award sought

The Aaron Stookey Spirit of Philanthropy Award will be presented by the Community Foundation of Boone County Monday, Nov. 10, at the Boone County Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet. The award annually recognizes the individuals and/or businesses in Boone County that are exemplary in their philanthropic activities. Nominees are being sought from the public. To nominate a philanthropist, write a letter including the nominee’s name, address and a brief narrative on why the candidate deserves recognition.

Letters are due by 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 27. They can be mailed to the Community Foundation of Boone County, PO Box 92, Zionsville, IN 46077, faxed to 873-0219, or e-mailed to info@communityfoundationbc.org. The award includes a commemorative plaque and a nominal cash gift to the winner’s charity of choice.



Homemakers plan holiday bazaar

The Boone County Extension Homemakers is looking for crafters to be part of its Holiday Bazaar Saturday, Nov. 22, at the new Witham Health Services Pavilion at the Boone County 4-H Fairgrounds, Exit 138 on Interstate 65. There will be a variety of unique gifts, crafts and decorative items for sale. For information about available booth space, call the Boone County Extension Office, (765) 482-0750 or stop in the office and pick up an application Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., 1300 E. County Road, 100 South, Lebanon.

Boone County-related announcements will run at least once, and may run additional times, if space provides.
