Library announces

programs

The Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library, 250 N. Fifth St., has a number of upcoming events. Registration is required for each children’s class and some adult programs. Call 873-3149 to register.

• Wii Play Games — 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays, Oct. 8, Nov. 12 and Dec. 10. Come play games in the Teen Area at the library. The Wii and board games will be set up. Open to students in grades six to 12. Registration is not required.

• Teen Read Week: Books with Bite — Oct. 12 to Oct. 18. Celebrate Teen Read Week by reading a book from the “Books with Bite” reading list.

• Drawing Words/Writing Pictures: The Art of Political Cartooning — 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12. Gary Varvel, Indianapolis Star editorial cartoonist and member of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists presents an afternoon of political cartoons.

• Books over Coffee — noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, Lora Hussey Room. Beverages and treats provided. Bring a friend. Registration is not required.

• Take a Bite If You Dare — 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, Hoffman Room. Come and make some gross-looking, but tasty, treats, including “bird poop” cookies and “kitty litter” cake. For grades six to 12.

• RFK and the 1968 Indiana Primary — 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14. Ray Boomhower, senior editor for the Indiana Historical Society Press, will discuss Robert F. Kennedy’s 10-day trek through the state during his 1968 presidential primary run.

• “The Nine” Panel Discussion — 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15. Panel members include U.S. District Judge David F. Hamilton, former news reporter and current public relations executive Melissa Mayer, New Castle Judge Carol Goodwick and U.S. history teacher David Rodgers.



Women for Obama

to meet

Melina Kennedy, former deputy mayor of Indianapolis under Mayor Bart Peterson, will speak at the Women for Obama meeting slated for 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, at Plum’s Upper Room, 112 S. Main St.

The evening will include complementary hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. The event is designed to provide answers to questions, support for concerns and to celebrate the history of the Suffragette Movement. Plum’s Upper Room was once a secret meeting place for Suffragettes and both Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton lectured there.



Boys & Girls Club open house

The Boys and Girls Club of Zionsville will have an Open House from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, at its facility, 1575 Mulberrry St. Refreshments made by students in the Club Chef Program will be served. The staff will conduct a club tour and answer questions about the club’s programs and philosophy. Call 873-6670 with questions.



Rock for Alzheimer’s research

Zionsville Meadows Garden Homes, 1142 Hickory Lane (off Ford Road), is asking people of all ages to sign up to “rock” in front porch rocking chairs to raise money for Alzheimer’s disease research. The event will take place 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11; 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12; 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13; and 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15. Call the Garden Homes Clubhouse to sign up for a day and time (15-minute slots) to rock at 873-5247. Then ask friends, neighbors, co-workers, etc. to make a donation to support your effort. Bring donations on the day to “rock.”

Checks should be made payable to Alzheimer’s Association of Indiana.

• Digital Photography Workshops — 10 a.m. to 12 noon, Saturdays. Workshop No. 1: Seeing Creatively and Cropping. Develop a creative perspective outside the mundane; Oct. 18. Workshop No. 2: Light and Subject Selection. Photography means ‘drawing with light.’ Explore this element and learn how to create compelling images; Nov. 1. Workshop No. 3: Color and Angles. Explore how color impacts and transforms the mundane into the fabulous; Nov. 8. Workshop No. 4: Inclement Weather and Manipulating Images for Creative Impact. Create captivating images in poor weather conditions and learn techniques to turn ordinary shots into intriguing ones; Nov. 15.

Chili cook-off returns

The 14th Annual Brick Street Chili Cook-Off and charity fundraiser is set for noon to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, at The Friendly Tavern, 290 S. Main St. The event will raise funds for the Zionsville Food Bank. Agency Associates, Inc. will again be matching donated funds. A panel of judges will taste their way to the winning recipe. The winning cook will receive a trophy, bragging rights for the year and the possibility of seeing their chili recipe on the Friendly’s menu. There will also be a “People’s Choice” award winner, based on the chili that receives the most votes from the public. Ballots will be provided at the cook-off. Donations for the Zionsville Food Bank may be made during the event.

GhostWalk tickets available

The SullivanMunce Cultural Center presents its seventh annual GhostWalk — a spirited history of Zionsville — Oct. 17 and 18. GhostWalk is a 45-minute guided walking tour of the Village in historic Zionsville where guests stop at multiple locations to hear ghost stories rooted in actual happenings from the area dating back as far as the 1800s. Actors recreate the stories in lively vignettes around town. Tours leave every 10 minutes, beginning at 6:30 p.m., from the front lawn of the SullivanMunce Cultural Center, 225 W. Hawthorne St.

WItham seeks

nominations

The annual Healthcare Professional of the Year award, sponsored by Witham Health Services, will be presented Monday, Nov. 10, during the Boone County Chamber of Commerce Annual Dinner and Civic Banquet.

The Healthcare Professional of the Year award is designed to highlight the best in Boone County. The individual can work in any aspect of the healthcare industry, including, but not limited to, registered nurse, certified nursing assistant, physician, emergency medical technician, paramedic, imaging technician, pharmacist, social worker, program director, dietary and housekeeping staff. The Healthcare Professional of the Year must demonstrate proficiency in patient care as well as an attitude of professionalism which commands respect from his or her affiliation, coworkers, patients and the community he/she services.

The nomination forms are available at the hospital or by calling 458-8120. Nominations should include the nominee’s name, address and phone number, as well as the name and number of the person making the nomination. It should include examples of how the candidate demonstrates his/her knowledge and skills relating to the delivery of patient care; describe activities about the candidate that demonstrate a degree of professionalism, eagerness to serve and quality of leadership, which goes beyond the expected norm within his/her organization; provide examples of candidate’s contributions to healthcare, within his/her community, which promote healthy living, public health education, or volunteer activities; and explain why the candidate should receive this award.

Sorority selling cheeseballs

Psi Iota Xi Sorority is selling cheeseballs to raise money for the speech and hearing impaired, arts programs and music programs in the Zionsville community. Cheeseballs come in these flavors: chocolate chip or nuts (for dessert); cheddar with nuts; cheddar with beef; portwine with nuts; smoky cheddar with nuts; hearty tavern (horseradish) with nuts. Nominations

for philanthropy award sought

The Aaron Stookey Spirit of Philanthropy Award will be presented by the Community Foundation of Boone County Monday, Nov. 10, at the Boone County Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet. The award annually recognizes the individuals and/or businesses in Boone County that are exemplary in their philanthropic activities. Nominees are being sought from the public. To nominate a philanthropist, write a letter including the nominee’s name, address and a brief narrative on why the candidate deserves recognition.

Letters are due by 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 27. They can be mailed to the Community Foundation of Boone County, P.O. Box 92, Zionsville, IN 46077, faxed to 873-0219, or e-mailed to info@communityfoundationbc.org. The award includes a commemorative plaque and a nominal cash gift to the winner’s charity of choice.



Breast cancer event at NightenGals

Throughout October, NightenGals owner Patti Symons will host a Breast Cancer Awareness Event and donate $5 for each bra sold to the Sharon L. Bassett Breast Cancer Foundation. Bassett was a Zionsville resident who succumbed to breast cancer several years ago. NightenGals, 20 W. Pine St., is open Monday from noon to 6 p.m. and Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Call Symons at 733-4100 for more information.
