“Chautauqua” makes a comebackAt the turn of the 20th century, before radio, before TV, there were “Chatauquas” (Sha-talk-was). The first Chautauqua was started as a kind of outdoor adult education program for Sunday School teachers at a campsite on Chatauqua Lake in upstate New York. The outdoor setting merged family entertainment and recreation into an educational program and soon Chatauquas became popular around the country, including in Zionsville. A revived Zionsville Chatauqua will take place from 9 to 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, July 22-24 at the shelter behind Zionsville Town Hall, 1100 W. Oak St. The event is sponsored by the Zionsville Christian Church and discussions will be led by Ruffer and Martha Farley. The July 22 topic is “The Chatauqua Movement and the Zionsville Chatauqua.” Saint Francis of Assisi will be discussed on July 23, and The Prayer of St. Francis is the topic for the final session on July 24.The free program will kick off with complementary coffee and pastries at 9 a.m., followed by the discussion at 9:30 a.m. Attendees may drop their children off for child care at the Zionsville Christian Church, 120 Ninth St. before the event and pick them up following it. For more information, contact the church at 873-5301. Reservations are helpful but not necessary.
